With its long words, tricky pronunciation and false friends, the German language can easily lead the learner into a world of embarrassment. Here are 12 of the best from our readers. Warning: Some are a little naughty.

German grammar is not the only thing that is hard to get your head around – the vocabulary is a minefield too.

Our readers came up with their most embarrassing mistakes, which include accidentally telling a policeman that they were a prostitute, and the time they wished their host family a “good naked”.
