The mother, 48, and her daughter, 28, were on holiday in the Mendoza region of the South American country.

They were on a bus travelling about 50 kilometres outside of the town of Mendoza when a lorry carrying garlic and thought to be travelling 100 kilometres an hour up the wrong side of the motorway collided head on with the bus.

Bursting into flames almost on impact, 17 people died in the vehicle and 14 were injured. Though the Mendoza health ministry said that two Germans were dead, the majority of the bodies will be identified on Wednesday.

Argentinian authorities said they were working under the impression that the garlic truck driver was not drunk.
