They were marching down a country road in the Eifel region of western state Rhineland Palatinate, when the 42-year-old driver hit the group. He claimed it was too dark and foggy to see them. All the soldiers were, however, wearing reflective vests.

Of the 17-strong group from the Büchel airbase, seven were seriously injured, a police spokesman confirmed.

He added that some been walking on the grassy verge next to the road, and the others were marching on the road itself on right hand side when the car hit them while on a nighttime orientation training exercise.

All seven were badly injured. Police shut the road, near Laubach, as it filled with emergency service personnel and vehicles to help the injured troops.

The accident was the second in a week in the area for the army. One of its Tornado jets crashed shortly after taking off, forcing both pilots to eject on Thursday night. Neither of them were injured.
