The week began with the news that a 26-year-old man had been found asleep on top of a horse on Saturday morning, after taking shelter in a barn on the way home from a party in Bavaria.

Monday brought the arrival of the "St. Jude" storm, which killed eight and caused widespread destruction across Germany, damaging buildings and cars as far south as Göttingen in Lower Saxony.

One of the spookiest spots in Germany also makes an appearance: Babenhausen barracks, where it's said the ghosts of Nazi soldiers can be heard endlessly marching up and down.

Our roundup also includes pictures from the week's other big stories: "bling bishop" Tebartz-van Elst's refuge in a Bavarian abbey, German scientists' discovery of a new solar system, the Gestapo chief buried in a Jewish cemetery, and Green MP Christian Ströbele's Moscow meeting with whistleblower Edward Snowden.
