As Monday arrived, most of Germany was talking about the televised debate between Chancellor Angela Merkel and her main challenger Peer Steinbrück of the Social Democrats. And as Bavarian leader Horst Seehofer's turn arrived, he was given a very rough ride by his challenger.

A post the size of a third of a football pitch was unveiled in Berlin, bearing Merkel's hands in her signature “triangle of power” pose.

Talking of football, star player Mesut Özil was sold to Arsenal for a wallet-lightening €50 million. He also got a trendy new haircut.

Others with cash, but less interested in football, could always place their bets on Adolf Hitler's Swastika ring. Made of rubies and silver, it's going up for auction in the US and has been valued at around $100,000.

We have also included pictures of a dramatic bus crash and a touching shot of the country's president hugging French President Francois Hollande at a village destroyed entirely during World War II.
