Veteran metallers Rammstein hit the main stage at Wacken Open Air festival on Thursday night, even welcoming 74-year-old cult German singer Heino onto the stage for a guest appearance. He sang favourite Sonne as a duet with frontman Til Lindemann.

A mix of nationalities and ages, each of the 75,000 people at Wacken, Schleswig-Holstein, have one thing in common – the love of heavy metal. Around 30 percent travel from other countries to the festival, which over recent years has been growing in popularity.

Rammstein look like beginners compared with other names on the line-up which is headed by veterans Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, and Mötorhead.

We took a look at the photos, picking out some of the best from the festival so far.
