Performing fleas freeze to death before show
A swarm of performing fleas due to appear in a show at a fair in the town of Mechernich in North Rhine-Westphalia have perished in freezing conditions.
The fleas were being transported inside a Styrofoam-protected box when the deaths occurred, said Robert Bork, director of Bavaria’s flea circus.
The blood-sucking insects, known for their remarkable strength, were due to perform somersaults, play football and pull mini carriages.
The show has been kept on the road, however, by parasite expert Professor Heinz Mehlhorn, who has donated 50 of his own fleas to stand in for the deceased performers.
Bork has acknowledged the show will be “a little more low-key” but has confirmed the new fleas are fit for the performance.
