Germany's answer to the Grammys, the Echo Music Awards, took place in Berlin on Thursday night. The biggest winner was punk rockers Die Toten Hosen, who took home the prize for Best German Rock/Pop group.

Established in 1992, nominations for Germany's top music award are awarded on the basis of previous year's sales. It is one of the biggest events in the country's music calendar.

In attendance was American singer Lana Del Rey, who won the gong for Best International Newcomer after experiencing widespread success in 2012 and Germany's favourite British Band Depeche Mode, who won Best International Group in 2010.

Just a few of this year's performers included Eurovision hopefuls Cascada, as well as singers Carla Bruni and Katie Melua.

Leading up to the night was not controversy-free though, as complaints from nominees saw organisers German Phono Academy removing rock band Frei.Wild from the nominations list for their reputed link with the far-right scene.
