An apparently drunk driver drove his car into the Main river in Frankfurt early Sunday morning, but the 27-year-old driver and his passenger, 23, managed to escape, the police said.

Authorities believe the driver was drunk and driving too fast when he ploughed into the murky waters of the Main, the river that runs through Frankfurt.

The 23-year old extremely wet passenger, who was under shock, managed to hail a taxi and told the driver of the accident.

But he said there were two to three additional passengers in the car. The vehicle's driver notified the police in Kelsterbach, near the Frankfurt airport, and said he drove it into the Main “somewhere in Frankfurt.”

Both men went to hospital. Divers searched the car but did not find any additional passengers, the police said.
