One of Germany's best-known film exports, Run Lola Run, starring Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu, is being taken to the stage – as an opera.

Tom Tykwer's film tells the story of a young woman caught up in a robbery, whose options are explored with multiple endings as she races to save her man.

Produced in 1998, the film was Tykwer's first global hit, launching his international career which proceeded with the film adaptation of Patrick Süsskind's novel Perfume.

Tykwer has just finished making Cloud Atlas with Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant and Halle Berry.

Now the story will be put on stage at the Regensburg Theatre next February – the first time Tykwer has given permission for such an adaptation of the film.

Ludger Vollmer will write the music – four years ago he wrote music for the opera of Head On – the film by Fatih Akin, called Gegen Die Wand in German.
