Even though this list stretches from war narratives to sexual awakenings, the Romantic Movement to post-modernism, it can only scratch the surface of the wealth of authors Germany has to offer.

We even decided to leave out the man generally regarded as Germany's greatest writer - Goethe - because his best-known works were plays and poems.

So click through the gallery and check out our choices - from Günter Grass to Cornelia Funke, there should be something to suit even the fussiest of readers. If your favourite is not here, feel free to add to the list below.

I cannot believe you are placing the throwaway trash churned out by Roche alongside works by Hesse, Grass, et al. What a joke! She may be bright, but 'Feuchtgebiete' isn't going to change the course of German literature or have people talking about it in decades to come, like 'The Tin Drum' for example, now is it? Totally daft!

I am pleased Karl May is up there. By coincidence you show the second of the Orient cycle, "Durchs wilde Kurdistan", which I am re-reading at the moment - in ebook form on my Kindle. When I read it as a young teenager May's detailed descriptions of the Teufelanbeters' religion seemed fanciful, now I know that he was spot on. He must have had a fantastic range of reference books at his disposal.

You also claim that Karl May never visited the Wild West. Maybe he did not get that far, but he travelled to the US in 1908
