The Local's top ten German novelists

In this week's Local List we run through our favourite German novelists. It was no mean feat to pick just 10 in a country which has produced arguably some of the world's most influential literature.


Even though this list stretches from war narratives to sexual awakenings, the Romantic Movement to post-modernism, it can only scratch the surface of the wealth of authors Germany has to offer.

We even decided to leave out the man generally regarded as Germany's greatest writer - Goethe - because his best-known works were plays and poems.
