Neighbours in Rödinghausen were woken up shortly before 3.30 a.m. on Christmas Day by the huge explosion which completely levelled the house.

As soon as a fire which started in the wreckage was put out, police working with dogs started the grim task of trying to find survivors – or bodies.

But after hours of searching, authorities said none of the 16-member family appeared to have been at home.

The Neue Westphälische regional newspaper said on Sunday that the eight adults and eight children normally lived in the house.

More than 220 emergency workers responded to the incident, evacuating several nearby houses and moving the people to a school for a few hours until thick smoke had cleared.

Story continues below…

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the explosion.

What are the odds that all 16 were out of the house at 3am. They are either a very tight family and extremely lucky or maybe something more sinister at work here.

Something more sinister like God having mercy on them and having them travel and stay in other places over the Christmas holiday and sparing their lives?

@EnglishTed - Tied that all together, didn't ya? :))

@hanskarl - Way to keep up the positive attitude! I hope you're right.

It could be the result of ,faulty wiring, or a gas explosion, arson is difficult to prove if done with a little knowledge.

If this was the result of an insurance scam, I would be afraid that some one could be at the door when this happened or a passer- by could be killed or injured, turning this into a much more serious crime.
