At least 600 pigs and 10 cows were killed in a farm fire on Christmas Day morning, police in Upper Bavaria said.

A barn and series of sheds holding around 1,200 pigs and 150 cattle burned to the ground as fire fighters worked through the night to control the blaze in the small community of St. Wolfgang.

A house was also damaged in the conflagration, which is thought to have caused €1 million in damage.

Farmers worked with fire fighters to save as many of the animals as possible, and move them to neighbouring properties.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
