Sarrazin blasts SPD immigrant quota plan

In his first public comments since the centre-left party decided to drop its efforts to throw him out, Sarrazin spoke out in characteristic blunt style against his party's plan to introduce an "migrant" quota for senior positions.

“Intelligence doesn’t depend on whether or not you’re a migrant,” he said Tuesday night at an event in Waltrop in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia.

There were already prominent party members in Berlin of foreign ancestry, he said.

“The more migrant-minded these people are, the less inclined they have been to see problems or difficulties objectively,” he said.

SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel and general secretary Andrea Nahles announced on Monday the party would introduce an immigrant quota – widely seen as a reaction to criticism the party received after its leaders announced the were dropping procedures to kick Sarrazin out. Some 15 percent of leadership positions in the party will be prioritised for people of non-German backgrounds.

The decision not to eject Sarrazin has sparked a backlash. Nazim Kenan, 26, a rising SPD star in the state of Hesse of Kurdish background, announced he was quitting the party, citing the leadership’s “opportunistic approach” to the affair.

Sarrazin has consistently courted controversy with his provocative remarks about immigration and Muslims, most acutely last year when he published a best-selling book on the subject. Among other things, it suggests that certain ethnic groups, notably from Muslim countries tend to be less intelligent and are therefore holding Germany back when they migrate here.

Sarrazin said in Waltrop that anyone denying the hereditary nature of intelligence was “vacuous or criminally lazy-minded.”

Story continues below…

In his statements to the SPD leadership, he did not recant any of his statements on immigration, race or intelligence.

Say JA to quotas. Finally all of us Ausländer milking off the German state can finally have decent jobs.

"Sarrazin said in Waltrop that anyone denying the hereditary nature of intelligence..."

Of course, intelligence has a genetic component, just like a tendency to alcoholism and aggression - so what?

Firstly, who says that the parents of immigrants are less intelligent than the parents of Germans. Intelligence and knowledge are two very different things. There is no proof that modern humans are more intelligent than ancient Egyptians, say. There is even increasing evidence that Neanderthals were generally as intelligent as we are. There is absolutely nothing at all to suggest that any immigrant is less intelligent than his German counterpart, wherever he comes from.

Secondly, as anybody in the recruitment business knows, intelligence is only one factor you need from people and not even a high priority one. The dynamism often associated with immigrants often counts more than intelligence.

Thirdly, experience from around the world shows that these eugenic ideas are all nonsense. One hundred years ago, it was 'obvious' to people in America and in South Africa that people with black skin were less intelligent than those with white skin. Some still think so, but most now call it racism. So it is with muslim bashing.

time to ship Sarrazin off to the NDP

anybody who thinks that there is a group of people (ethnic, gender group...) that´s inherently less intelligent (therefor inferior) is just a racist, plain and simple !

just ask any specialist: the most significant factor in children academic performance is there parent financial situation: that is if you´ re financially secure your offsprings will have the best chance for success. race plays no role.

He is just speaking the truth wqhen everyone else is afraid to (because they are afraid of losing their jobs). This is a brave man. What is the SPD thinking, reserving 15% of leadership positions for immigrants? So the best man for the job won't get it, but a less-qualified person - whose only asset is apparently his race- will get it? Tell me how that is not racism against Germans?! Reverse discrimination. Sorry guys, that doesn't work either.

"certain ethnic groups, notably from Muslim countries tend to be less intelligent and are therefore holding Germany back when they migrate here." Definitely true to a degree. Germany has better schools and a history of scientists, artists, and engineers. Besides, where is the motivation for Muslims to be more educated in a socialist welfare state?

"Sarrazin said in Waltrop that anyone denying the hereditary nature of intelligence was 'vacuous or criminally lazy-minded.' ¦quot;

Well, the official position of the American Anthropological Association, the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and UNESCO is that there is no evidence for innate differences in mental capacity between races. So Sarrazin just insulted all these guys (and many more)?

It is funny to see that many Westerners demonstrate ignorance by having no clue about Muslim contributions to civilisation. The easiest example is the Arabic figures (numbers). Europe learnt surgery procedures from Al Zahrawi (his encyclopedia was used in Europe as a medical reference for the next 500 years). In the 9th century, Abbas ibn Firnas designed a flying machine -- hundreds of years before da Vinci drew plans of his own. http://www.1001inventions.com/ is a good reference for other examples.

I am of Austrian descent..am I also subject of the migrant quota?

I guess not, probably only islamic migrants are considered migrants.

Some cultures have developped in the last 1000 years. I respect these arabs, who lived 1000 years ago, but it has nothing to do with the present. You cannot deny that some immigrants export the conditions, which made them flee and in the end drag us down
21:36 May 4, 2011 by GolfAlphaYankee
@vonkoenigsberg: quote :"Germany has better schools and a history of scientists, artists, and engineers."

well why stop there? Germany also started 2 world wars and planed and executed the biggest mass murders in history ..... just saying !

so is that mean that Germans have a genetic inclination to crime? see who stupid this is?

Why have we to take these immigrants? they are only here to bleed us dry in welfare and take our jobs! This man speaks the truth!

@ Thorsten

Not only some, but all cultures developed in the last 1000 years. If you do not know of Arab scientists still alive, take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Muslim_scientists. You will find Nobel prize winners, mathematicians, economists, physicists, engineers and many more. For example, did you know that Jawed Karim, of Bangladesh origin, born in Eastern Germany, is a co-founder of the popular video sharing website YouTube and that many of the core components of PayPal, including its real-time anti-fraud system, were designed and implemented by him? Pierre Morad Omidyar, of Iranian origins, born in France, is the founder/chairman of eBay? So if there are some immigrants that "drag us down", there are many that "drag us up".

We just have to open our eyes and ears and stop taking as granted what racists looking for fame (such as Sarrazin) say. By the way, do you know that 'Sarrazin' is the name given during Middle Age to Muslims living in Europe? So much about his ancestors :)
23:07 May 4, 2011 by Thorsten
Just look at Luton, Rosengard, la banlieue. It is useless to deny the problems.

Read his books and you will lose your prejudices fulled by the media. It is not about indivuals, but the mass, and cultures themselves.

The wikipedia article is really fun. First, there is no list on "Christian scientists", second 99% of these scientists are already dead. It is typical propaganda to deny the obvious.

There are many people, who strongly oppose racism, but simply do not feel comfortable in cities like Kreuzberg, that have been taken over by a different culture and leave. Even if they would not admit it in public, they prefer traditional villages in Austria to gang culture, veil, criminality, riots and all the precious things, that multiculturalism brought...

Sarrazin comes from "Sarazenen". Muslims living in Europe? Not really...

I am not denying the problems. Obviously Germany has an integration issue which starts at 'Ausländerbehörde', where one could hardly find a public servant able to speak English. And continues with language tests which are easier for Integration students (if your teaching has poor results, the easiest way to have good passing rate is to decrease the standards). How can you expect then easy and fast integration? So of course the first candidates to unemployment are the immigrants that have problems learning the language, even if they are better educated than many Germans. If we talk about cultures and not individuals, there is no absolute way to say that one is better than the other. The multiculturalism brought to the world the benefit of learning from each other. For example, the first concept that foreigners learn in Germany is 'Service-Wüste Deutschland'. If you visited Turkey (I did that last year), you know that the Turkish approach to client service is closer to common sense (and the American way of servicing). The big problem with Sarrazin is that he is talking hot air. There is no real proof to show that immigrants harm the hosting country. Of course there are pluses and minuses, but no serious study/research found a general negative correlation between immigrants and the well being of a country. Or can you prove me wrong? Do you have any objective information to back up your statement about people moving from neighbourhoods like Kreutzberg to villages in Austria? Otherwise of course there are always people not satisfied with inevitable evolutions (like gentrification, which do not really has to do with immigrants). And riots like the on the 1st of May have also nothing to do with immigrants (well, of course you would find some immigrants among the protesters, but it is not them that drive the riot). About Muslims living in Europe, history has something to say about the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkans. 'Sarrazin' is the French word, so the grand-grand-grandfather of the guy was probably coming from France, possibly arriving there from the Iberian Peninsula. And I bet that 99% of the Christian scientists are also already dead. It is a bit natural, considering the long history of both religions, isn't it?

From michael4096:

"Secondly, as anybody in the recruitment business knows, intelligence is only one factor you need from people and not even a high priority one. The dynamism often associated with immigrants often counts more than intelligence."

So that explains how/why companies write crappier and crappier software the bigger they become.

Aha! Intelligence basically doesn't matter! If only every company could "benefit" from the input of recruiters!

@ Major

I¦#39;ve been watching your posts for a while and I have greatly enjoyed them. The simplicity of your comments has made me laugh many times over.

But here are a few things. You are from the UK (I¦#39;m assuming that as you constantly reference it), so that leaves a couple of possibilities as to why you are here in Germany

a)You are a UK soldier or UK government employee stationed over here. If that¦#39;s the case then I hope you enjoy your deployment in Germany, but really…. Why get yourself so passionately involved in local politics when you have no vested interest in it? Especially when you have nothing to contribute to the conversation.

b)You have moved to Germany from the UK for work, or marriage, or some other reason. Now if this is the case, then why are you so against the EU free labour market that you, yourself enjoy. It seems a bit ridiculous for someone to be against the EU when you are a direct beneficiary of it. Rather silly I¦#39;d say…

They are just a couple of thoughts for you to mull over.

I do like your username. Invokes honour and respect. It¦#39;s rather a shame you are probably just a lonely man sitting in front of a computer all day blaming everything else for your problems.

¦quot;Intelligence doesn¦#39;t depend on whether or not you¦#39;re a migrant,¦quot;

Sarrazin said in Waltrop that anyone denying the hereditary nature of intelligence was ¦quot;vacuous or criminally lazy-minded.¦quot;

These comments appear to be in conflict. I find it interesting that the first is a direct quote and the second is a quote to support a characterization.

Culture counts. I believe that all peoples are equally intelligent but their culture shapes the way they think. If you do not think the Muslim world is constraining itself when it comes to education then you are ignorant; not stupid. I have been to two big malls in Kuwait and Dubai. Neither had a book store. I thought that was telling.

Get you ministers to come to visit any town or city in england & see how mass immigration works or not!? Integration-sorry not very many white folk want to live in an ethnicised enviroment so does immigration work when white flight is the norm? 2 million since 1990. Dont know whether to blame our last damned labour gov or Brussels saying we need more? If there was something subtle about this situation but there isnt, its a mass exodus. get me outta here
11:38 May 5, 2011 by adipk
@ChrisRea may be you are right. But where i am living aulander behorde people just speak English to push you down.

I am a student here and i am a researcher from an Islamic country To be very frank i never thought about settling here. Because i never found friendly and open heart people. Even some time i blame my self because i prefer Germany to come over my Canadian opportunity.

Most of German people are "high educated" with book in hand during train journy and show them self as one of nobel person but when start talking its S$%T. What is the advantage of being educated if they dont have humanity.

Intelligent and education cant be measure with number of book shop but with their customs traditions, their behavior and their approach.

God bless this country and its people, this i can only say here.

I'm amused the way LiberalGuy tries to characterize posters he disagrees with as "just a lonely man sitting in front of a computer all day " as he did again above, this time with Major. Any bets that LiberalGuy has described himself exactly? :-) I would politely suggest that LiberalGuy change his name to LonelyGuy. Maybe it will bring some offers and change his luck. Couldn't hurt.

GolfAlphaYankee Germany never started the 1st WW.

Sarrazin must be getting ready to release a new book.

Intelligence has no racial bias and is in no way a factor of race. The fact that an educational system available to all would up the achievement scores does not mean a country where education is not available to all the people and or generally is poor means the population is less intelligent.

A quota system, in the employment context, is a hiring system that gives preference to protected group members.Quota systems result in reverse discrimination.

The best person for the job is my preferred system of employment.
12:20 May 5, 2011 by LiberalGuy

Well i'm sitting here at my desk in between classes where I teach art history and actually contribute to the knowledge of our young generation to write a response to you. So what's your contribution to society? In fact how intergrated are you? Last time we spoke you stood up for raandy (it seems the xenophobes have a little club here) and in that discussion you offered not one argument against any of the points i raised. You merely drifted off into you same 'sound bite'. So i'll ask again. How intergrated are you in to German society? My guess it's not nearly as close to the level of intergartion you expect from fellow immigrants. So maybe some self refelction is in order. As for Mr Sarazin i'm sure he paid close attention in school when he was learning algebra and other fundamentals of science and maths that were brought to us by the Arabs...
14:02 May 5, 2011 by FredFinger
Thats right LonleyGuy, and I'm now seated on the papal throne here in the Vatican. My last posting hit a bit too close to home, did it? :-)

The Algebra and other fundamentals you refer too are the medieval remnants of a decayed culture that has been morally and culturally bankrupt for very many centuries. We in the western world don't need the additional burden of immigration from those uneducated, deprived masses as we try to sort out the many issues (social included) we already have on our plates.

And lastly a few words about "art history" - "Those who can, do. Those who can't teach." I have to say as a professional artist I've been lucky to be able to "do" my entire career. Its been a gift for which I'm thankful daily. And to whose regime I must now return. Au revoir.

Why should Europe accept any quota? These damn people are only coming in to bleed us in dry in welfare and take our houses and jobs! Dragging Europe down to third world status as it becomes a Muslim majority against the wishes of the indigenous populations!
23:07 May 5, 2011 by hrt1
Fred-F, so why are you so sensitive to any poster that says "sitting in front of a PC all day long" ?
00:52 May 6, 2011 by FredFinger
SENSITIVE!! ME!! I'm just trying to polish LonelyGuy's writing style. This sitting in front of a PC thing he (or she!) goes on about with posters he (or she) disagrees with is becoming boring. Oh the suffering! If we're lucky he'll find another amusing way of abusing folks here that don't share his views.

On the other hand you might be right, this may indeed be several posts too many. A tip of the FredFinger hat to you sir.
22:21 May 6, 2011 by EastPrussia
This is tricky. If you implement a quota system for hiring, it makes the people from Germany angry because they think they're being short-changed by someone with less qualifications. On the other hands, a quota is basically like telling an immigrant that they are not worth enough to be hired like a regular German, therefore the state requires a system by which their employment can be guarenteed based on superficial factors. This surely pushes their immigrant status in their faces, and can make assimilation that much more difficult. There has to be some other way than a dumb quota system.
23:38 May 6, 2011 by Biorealist
@ ChrisRea,

Those are political statements. Actual empirical published research consistently shows there are average group differences. University of Chicago geneticist Bruce Lahn & Lanny Ebenstein recently wrote in Nature that genomic research is uncovering further group genetic diversity and people need to prepare to accept this.
10:17 May 7, 2011 by bugger
People, don't go in details, you must see bigger picture of racism. Racism is today integral component of imperialism, Sarrazin just support interest of corporations, therefore he target Muslims, Muslims possess energy resources. It was the same in the past, in the time of colonialism, they put Africans in zoo garden and they said they are animals, just to be able to sell them, beat them, kill them, without to go in the prison for that. If you kill a thing or animal, you were not punished for that. Royal families were the root of racism in the middle age (doctors supported them with theories about "animals") and today, corporations and politicians are the root of racism. Without support from rich people, Hitler would never get power. After Hitler died, rich financiers of Hitler survived and they continue with their racism. Fascism survived and after 50 years it is not hiding anymore, immigration politics is clear fascism, and Muslims are especially targeted because of war and interests of energy corporations. War propaganda is dirty thing and it is racist propaganda.

Could you please post a link to the scientific research you mention? Google did not help me much. Of course there is genetic diversity between different ethnic groups. However, it is interesting if they are relevant or not (for example, a 2% difference is irrelevant from my point of view). Also the actual test are interesting as well (if there are language abilities needed to solve the test, then it is clear that immigrants have less chances on an average).

The 'political' statements I mentioned are the results of the research conducted by those organisations.
