Both the Koblenz regional environmental protection office and city licence agency (SGD) have approved hunters’ rights to kill the big cat, they said.

“We’re looking into if and how we can find the animal,” said Nicole Scherer, spokesperson for the licence agency.

The authorities believe the animal could be a black panther that escaped from a French animal park some time ago. A “large black creature” has been cited along the Belgian border near Trier four times just since August, a factor that informed the city’s decision, they said.

Tranquilising the animal is not a good enough option, officials said, because it could flee in the seven minutes it takes for the drugs to take hold.

The black creature was first seen in the Belgian Ardennes region, just on the other side of the German border, about one year ago. Later similar sightings were reported in other parts of Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany’s Eifel region near Trier.

“According to the number of sightings we must take the situation seriously,” said Thomas Müller, spokesperson for the Trier-Saarburg county administration.

After tigers and lions, black panthers are the world’s third-largest big cat species.

The article doesn't say whether this animal has hurt anyone or not. It's too easy to just kill it to alleviate a percieved problem. I say try trapping it first

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words and the caption and picture of the Black Panther says it all. "Marauding" and those BIG TEETH

Trapping should not be more expensive. I'm sure there are some trappers out there who would, in exchange for the practice at trapping, do it more or less for free. TranquiliZing is also an option: If you worry that the panther will flee, get a helicopter up there and follow the damn thing. Killing this noble beast is so unnecessary.

can't understand, why shoot such a beautiful creation? did he hurt anyone? people have paid a lot to help bred big cats back to the wild, and u'll kill one who archived this on it own?

I do not understand why the cat should be killed? Is it because it is an animal that lives on this planet like all other species? Why is it that people are so quick to KILL animals? Who said we (humans) are the only species on the planet that matter? Why is KILLING an option? It has a right to its life like we do. Why not leave it alone. If it has been loose for about a year then why kill it?

KILL, KILL, KILL! Why not try to live & let live?

danyang, he doesn't hurt anyone and he haven't behaved aggressively. Thanks to some newsletter like "Bild" which exaggerated so extreme that people are fearing the panther.

They justified their decision to allow it to be shot with the reason that It'll be to dangerous to capture him, because the narcotic need seven minutes to work. After an animal trainer refuted this reason, another idiotic reason came up. A biologist told the newsletter "if we think what a pit bull terrier could do with children, then we don't want to be responsible if it went in a urban area. The hunters should not hesitate and kill it." (loosely translated).

Some Newsletter cited this "biologist". As you can see, theres much here what I will call propaganda. Everyone with a brain knows that you can't compare an animal, which was made aggressive by people with a wild one.

That are only a few reasons.

By the way, I've an article on my website which every news about the panther, further informations and all the other reasons which were told by some people. It's only in german and will be translated soon. Contact me if you want a link ( maybe some of you are able to understand german ).
