The Berlin Fashion Week begins on Wednesday as the German capital transforms itself into a giant catwalk for designers, models and fashion industry insiders for the next few days. But plenty of the events are also open to the public.

Held twice a year and promoted by the city since 2007, Fashion Week has several highlights including fashion shows, trade fairs, parties and awards.

While the Mercedes-Benz fashion shows will strut across Bebelplatz in the heart of the city centre, Bread & Butter Berlin will once again take up residence at Tempelhof Airport.

Other highlights include the Premium fashion fair at Station-Berlin, the lingerie and bodywear fair, the event demonstrating the importance of environmentally friendly and sustainable fashion and the Showfloor Berlin at the Umspannwerk in Kreuzberg.

John Malkovich, not so much an icon of fashion than of film, even dropped by on Tuesday to introduce his “Technobohemian” men’s collection at the Berlin Fashion Week.

“I have always liked fashion,” said Malkovich, describing the collection as "light and airy."
