Should Joachim Löw's side reach the final in Johannesburg on July 11, most Germans would show a red card to a potential night of passion in favour of the chance to see their team in action on television.

In a survey for the Reader's Digest magazine, only five percent of those questioned would prefer a night between the sheets with their loved one to watching Germany contest the World Cup final.

And only an emergency would stop 52 percent watching the final live, while a fifth of all those surveyed said not even that excuse would prevent them being glued to the television, should Germany reach the final.

But 38 percent of those questioned said they were not interested in football.

Story continues below…

However, Germany's success on the field can turn up the heat in the nation's bedrooms: there were a flood of new-born babies here nine months after the national side finished third at the World Cup four years ago.

There's no way Germany's going to reach the final, so the issue is academic.

No one needed a survey to figure that out. Soccer > Sex

Prufrock2010 do you like the taste of crow? ;-)

I'm confused... with 20 minutes intermission between the two halfs of each football match, there's plenty of time for sex... and pizza!!

I read some time ago that during World Cups there is a vast increase in the amount of affairs being had by women being neglected. Basically, sex will not decrease, it will probably increase and be with a far higher variety of women for those men who are not interested in the world cup.

what, no sex?, common really?, yeah right!

I've eaten crow in my time, and it's not so tasty. That's why I've engaged Goldman Sachs to hedge my bet. :)

They are the best at getting to the finals.... the rest is all about the numbers and probability. The more times they make it to the finals the better their chances for victory. Go Germany!!!!!

When's the last time Germany was in the finals again? Wasn't Willy Brandt the chancellor then?

Germany is actually tied with Brasil for WC Final appearances, and we won our last world cup in 1990. Our last finals appearance was 2002. Germany also holds several World Cup records, as do our everlasting foes, the Brasilians: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_records

So, you should really remove your foot from your mouth. Germany is, and remains, one of the greatest World Cup nations ever seen.

I still think England will finally do it after .... is it really 44 years?

About time then ..... just don't bring it down to penalties, OK?

I would imagine the introduction of the deep-fried Mars bar is probably related. ;)

Lighten up, Grenadier. I was being facetious. Of course 20 years can seem like an eternity....

Hi Grenadier,

That's Scotland, not England.

We deep fry bread .... amongst other things.

Wouldn't mind trying one of those Mars Bars though.

I do apologize for the mix-up. I will promise to take greater care in the future when assigning revolting foods to nationalities.

I do, however, compliment you lot on recognizing the infinite goodness that is sausage, mashed potatoes, and beer.

Look no farther than the blow-up doll in the photograph atop this article. I'm sure she'll be available.

Anyway I think we will all pass but thanks for thinking of us...not!
