The young man, who had apparently borrowed the Audi R8 speedster from a friend, was travelling well above 250 kilometres per hour when he blew past speed monitors in northern France, French daily Le Parisien reported on Sunday.

The speed limit on the road was 130 kilometres per hour, but officials believe the Frenchman, who was found to have consumed cannabis after being stopped by police, may have been driving as fast as a dizzying 300 kilometres per hour.

Story continues below…

The speed demon won’t be allowed to drive his friend's car back to Germany any time soon, since he is scheduled to face French court proceedings.

I was driving south on the A - 9 from Berlin at 180 kph in the center lane and was passed by a S 600 M-B sedan that must have been going that fast. Something that big going that fast is a real sight.

So the real question is: will his friend get his R8 back or has it been held for evidence indefinitely only to be lost forever in a bureaucratic web? Mr. Sarkozy needs a makeup gift for Carla.

"who was found to have consumed cannabis after being stopped by police"

According to this sentence, he lit up after he was stopped, just to settle his nerves? Oder? Pretty funny really...

I was involved in a chase that fast in the Aachen area back in 1979 while riding with BGS (I belonged to Border Operations Detachment, 42d MP Group Customs) chasing a smuggler. I looked over at the odometer and it scared the living H*** out of me! Caught the guy, too!
