German tennis great Boris Becker, no stranger to scandal himself, has come out in support of Tiger Woods, saying he sympathises with the golf star whose life is in disarray after his infidelity was exposed.

“That’s how it was for me for 10 years,” Becker has told talk show Beckmann, according to an interview preview released Sunday. “I experienced just the same thing and I can sympathise with him.''

Becker famously had sex with a Russian model in the broom closet of a fancy London restaurant in 1999, while he was married. He later paid £2 million in a paternity claim and described the swift liaison as “the most expensive five seconds of my life.”

At the same time, Becker admitted he was “surprised by the dimension, the frequency” of Woods’ apparent affairs.

“Given he had to cover it all up, purely logistically, how did it organise it all? He must have been constantly changing phones and covering his tracks,” Becker marvelled.

Widely reported rumours claim Woods, who is married to former Swedish model Elin Nordegren, has had affairs with at least a dozen women.

Becker said Woods would face a tough challenge saving his marriage.

“Of course new stories are always going to come from the outside. Whether they are true or not doesn’t matter any more. Every week a new woman comes along.”

The full interview is to be broadcast Monday night on television channel ARD.
