Fire fighters in the Bavarian city of Alzenau made a child very happy on Thursday night when they used special night vision equipment to retrieve a tiny lost pet.

The child apparently lost its pet guinea pig while cleaning its cage.

“The guinea pig immediately recognised his singular chance to flee to freedom and disappeared quickly into a nearby blackberry bramble,” the fire department reported.

But “nothing in the world” would persuade the animal to return home, they said.

The family called the fire department, who first cut back the bush and then used an infrared camera to locate the wily cavy.

A fireman then got down on all fours and scooped up the freezing animal, returning it to the child.
