The 60-year-old man from Guben, Brandenburg was with his wife and another relative near the Schwerin Castle, where the BUGA is being held. A severe storm hit the area in the early evening, and the man was struck by the bolt as he and his companions sought shelter under a large linden tree, police reported.

A passerby alarmed police, but the man was already unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Both his 60-year-old wife and 53-year-old female relative were hospitalised for observation due to their proximity to the lightning bolt, but first reports said they had suffered no external injuries. They will likely be released within the next two days, police in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania said.

The BUGA garden festival began on April 23 and runs until October 11.
