Officers managed to save some 4,200 trout from certain death on the autobahn after an emergency call from a truck driver, Bavarian police reported on Wednesday.

The Czech fish transporter called police in a panic at 3:20 am saying his aquatic cargo was in danger due to a lack of oxygen, but that he didn’t know how to help them.

The truck’s tank had a defective circulation pump, police from the town of Feucht discovered upon arriving at the rest area where the driver had stopped.

“The Feucht officers found a quick solution,” the police statement said. “The fish transporter tanks were hooked up to nearby water hydrants where the trout were looked after with fresh water.”

The police said the Czech truck driver was pleased about the lucky rescue of his living freight, but didn't mention if the fish were destined to end up on the dinner table anyway.
