Police in southern Germany say they rescued a small child from the clutches of kidnappers who had planned to blackmail the family for several million euros in ransom money.

The police in Emmendingen, and the state prosecutor in Freiburg, in Baden-Württemberg, said on Sunday they had managed to retrieve the child, who is not yet two years old, from the three kidnappers, according to news agency AP.

All three kidnappers were arrested and the child returned unharmed to its parents late on Saturday night.

The police say they will release further details of the operation later on Sunday.
