Parents furious at naked day care games
German parents of children at a day care centre in Duisburg are incensed that some of their kids were allowed to let it all hang out during play time. The caregiver who allowed the nude romp has lost her job.
A spokesperson for the city of Duisburg on Wednesday said between five to ten of the 120 children registered at the day care centre were allowed to play naked in a separate room after they had repeatedly taken their clothes off during play time on their own initiative.
"This decision was decidedly wrong, especially since all of the parents had not been informed," said the spokesperson.
The naked play first came to parents' attention in mid-November, and led to massive protests. One-third of parents have boycotted the centre out of anger or uneasiness.
The nude frolicking of some of the children first began after the summer holidays. The fact that other children were disturbed by the lack of clothing did not put an end to the practice. Staff decided to put the nude kids in a separate room, where they could play, under supervision, in all of nature's glory.
While the parents of the kids playing au naturel were informed, other parents were not. And when word got out, parents were incensed, talking about "pornography" at the day care centre.
"If all the parents had been told about this from the beginning, it would have quickly been clear that the idea had no support," said spokesperson Anja Huntegeburth. "We deeply regret the incident and immediately put a stop to it."
She said the caregiver had no improper motivation, but had an "overly 60's attitude" and had wanted the children to learn to be unselfconscious about nudity.
Despite what are reported to have been good intentions, the caregiver has been suspended.
