Berlin police are searching for witnesses after a man and his dog fell from a Charlottenburg district bridge on Monday, daily Die Welt reported on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old fell 11 metres from the Kaiserdamm Bridge onto the A100 autobahn around 5:45 am and was narrowly missed by an oncoming truck, the paper reported. The driver stopped to help the man and his mixed breed dog.

The man suffered severe head injuries and was transported for immediately for surgery. Veterinarians also operated on his four-legged friend at an animal hospital.

The city autobahn A100 was closed during rescue operations.

Police said they are not sure what caused the fall, and have called for potential witnesses to come forward.
