Gorch Fock sailor missing at sea
A female sailor aboard the German navy training ship the Gorch Fock fell into the North Sea on Wednesday night around midnight while on watch and remains missing.
The navy said that a massive search effort for the 18-year-old officer candidate from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is underway.
“The crew immediately started rescue measures,” the navy said in a statement on Thursday. “The search continues and at present there are no further details are currently available.”
At the time of the accident the three-mast ship, which is used to teach sailors basic seamanship, was at full sail and some 20 kilometres north of the island Norderney.
