The navy said that a massive search effort for the 18-year-old officer candidate from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is underway.

“The crew immediately started rescue measures,” the navy said in a statement on Thursday. “The search continues and at present there are no further details are currently available.”

At the time of the accident the three-mast ship, which is used to teach sailors basic seamanship, was at full sail and some 20 kilometres north of the island Norderney.
