Karstadt department store chain to cut 450 posts
The German department store Karstadt will cut up to 450 administrative posts at its headquarters in western Essen, a company spokesman said on Tuesday.
Almost one in five workers at the site will go as part of a cost-savings plan that should be finalized by the end of the year, he said, confirming a report in the regional daily NRZ.
“Outright redundancies have not been ruled out,” Karstadt spokesman Michael Scheibe said. However, the chain, which is owned by the Arcandor group, would also offer alternative jobs, early retirement and part-time posts.
“The goal is to secure as many jobs as possible,” Günter Isemeyer, spokesman for trade union Verdi said.
