Part of a bridge under construction near Ilmenau collapsed on Monday evening, killing one worker and injuring three. Meanwhile an emergency vehicle ran over and killed a man in a wheel chair while racing to the scene, according to police on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old worker died on the scene of his injuries after a steel construction on a bridge for ICE trains collapsed, police in the German state of Thuringia said.

A fire engine racing to the scene of the bridge accident collided with a man in a wheel chair. The severely disabled man died a while later in a nearby hospital.

The two-track railway bridge is a part of a new, faster route between Munich and Berlin.
