Telekom set to close half its call centres

Deutsche Telekom is planning to close nearly half its call centres across the country, according to Focus magazine.
Mayors in the towns and cities concerned have already been informed that hundreds of jobs will be lost in their areas, the magazine says.
Centres in Cologne and Mönchengladbach will be shut down, as four of the nine centres in North Rhine-Westphalia close.
Only those call centres with between 400 and 900 employees will remain open.
A spokesman said on Sunday that the strategy was one of consolidation, and said that those workers affected would be offered a comparable one elsewhere.
