The family confirmed late on Tuesday a report by local newspaper Recklinghäuser Zeitung that Helene Indenbirken, called “Oma” by DiCaprio, had died in a hospital in Recklinghausen near her home in Oer-Erkenschwick in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Hollywood star had a close relationship with her over years and had taken her to the 2005 German premier of his film “Aviator” in Berlin. “It’s always good to see her,” he said at the time.

He visited his grandmother regularly in the Ruhr Valley region and even took her along to watch the filming of his film “Blood Diamond” set in Africa.

It was unclear whether DiCaprio would attend funeral ceremonies in Germany for her.
