Steinmeier headed to the presidential palace, where he and Suleiman are expected to discuss Lebanon's future now that a deal between the ruling coalition and Hezbollah-led opposition has been agreed to end 18 months of civil conflict.

The German minister has welcomed Suleiman's election and is promising Lebanese leaders German support as they struggle to create unity and rebuild the country, DPA reported.

The German minister is scheduled to hold talks later with House Speaker Nabih Berri and Premier Fouad Siniora before heading on to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

On Sunday afternoon, Steinmeier is set to visit troops from Germany's UNIFIL peacekeeping contingent aboard the frigate “Hessen.”
