A young Bavarian couple has offered their baby for sale on the internet auction site Ebay, prompting a police investigation.

The authorities from the town of Memmingen have opened a case against the 23-year-old mother and her 24-year-old partner from the village of Holzgünz “for suspicion of child trafficking,” chief investigator Wolfgang Sauter said on Friday.

The local child services office in the Allgäu region has already intervened and taken custody of the child.

The eight-month-old baby was “voluntarily placed in a child clinic by the mother in the presence of two employees from the youth office,” said the head of the office Egon Stocker.

There the child will be examined to insure it is in good health.

Ebay has already removed the auction labelled: “Baby – Pick-up in Person Only.”

“I’m offering here my nearly new baby for sale since it’s become too loud for me. It’s a boy around 70 centimetres big. You can use it in a baby sling or in a pram!” the advertisement read.

Several people from across the country alerted the police to the auction, who then passed on the information to the authorities in Memmingen.
