A 30-year-old woman has been arrested for pestering former chancellor Helmut Schmidt after she repeatedly called to his house professing her love for him.

The woman is said to have visited the 89-year-old's house in Hamburg with a letter filled with sweets, and then again with a card.

When she approached the house for a third time, security officers stepped in and arrested her under new German stalking laws.

The woman is said to be a huge fan of Schmidt, and told people she was his daughter in order to get close to his house.

She was referred to a psychiatric service, and released after an assessment found she did not pose a danger.
