A German tourist was gunned down by three assailants in downtown Lima as he tried to run away from them after he pulled money from a bank machine, police said Wednesday.

Axel Schulte, 70, was with two friends who were waiting in a car when he was attacked. He was declared dead at a hospital, police said, adding that authorities were trying to find the killers.

Shulte, who had arrived in Peru on Monday, had planned to visit the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in the southeast.
