The team, led by national coach Ermin Emrich, narrowly won against Sweden (27:26) and Croatia (22:16) in the qualifying round in Leipzig this week, securing their place in China.

“I still can’t believe we’ve done it”, said goal-keeper Clara Woltering after Saturdays game against Croatia, “It’s a phenomenal feeling!”

Not since the Atlanta games in 1996 have both the women and men’s teams of the German Handball Federation (DHB) played at the Olympics together.

Coach Emrich was beaming with pride after the qualifying round. “This is a really motivating moment,” he said. “There’s only one chance every four years and the girls really deserved to get it.”

U-Bahn train found filled with autumn foliage in Berlin

BVG staff are quite accustomed to cleaning up messes left in or around U-Bahn trains, but this one proved to be quite a different challenge.

The Berlin transit company’s workers discovered early Friday morning that someone had filled an U-Bahn carriage parked in storage with dried leaves, covering the entire floor and all the seats, Tagesspiegel reported on Saturday.

The clean-up effort involving brooms and fans lasted several hours and caused delays due to the train being out of service.
The trick was presumably the work of graffiti artists, Tagesspiegel explains, because an image of the autumnal U-Bahn scene was posted on the Facebook page Berlin Writers, a magazine and website dedicated to street art.

The post had the caption “Autumn is here!” And was shared more than 500 times as of Friday.
But not everyone was amused.
“Think about the passengers who had to work and because of you the train didn't come,” one Facebook user wrote.
