German cannabis growth on the rise

Cannabis is being grown in Germany in greater quantities than ever before, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) announced on Friday.
In the last year, police discovered 83 open-air plantations, and 347 indoor growing operations.
Police have observed a significant production increase in the last two years, said head of the BKA organized crime unit, Jürgen Maurer. Most of the cannabis is sold in the Netherlands where drug cartels provide funds for German plantation construction, he said.
Some of the plantations have been secured with booby traps and spring guns, Maurer said.
