Bitter cold and snow will continue on Wednesday, but the weather will warm gradually as the week goes on, according to weather service Meteomedia. Snow in the German Alps will ease as Wednesday progresses, but will continue to fall heavily in the Ruhr Basin and Saarland.

Germans living between Emsland and the Lausitz can look forward to a dry Thursday, but snow will continue to fall in the west and south above 600 metres.

Friday is expected to be rainy everywhere but the southeast of the country, where the sun will shine until evening.
