Bierhoff says Germany can win World Cup

Published: 23 Dec 12 11:47 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/sport/20121223-46951.html

Germany can win the 2014 World Cup, team manager Oliver Bierhoff believes, pointing to the presence of three Bundesliga sides in the Champions League last 16 to support his assertion.

"Naturally we want and we can win the title," he said in an interview in the German weekly magazine Focus.

"We've got lots of young players blessed with enormous potential, we've learned from the mistakes at Euro 2012 and because the international experience we've gained will give our ambitious team an extra boost.

"And with the excellent performances of Dortmund, Schalke and Bayern Munich in the Champions League the expectations regarding the Mannschaft have certainly increased."

Bierhoff reckons coach Joachim Löw has considerable tactical and strategic possibilities with young attacking players like Mario Goetze, Marco Reus, Mesut Özil, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller and Julian Draxler at his disposal.

Germany can "develop a totally new system based on the successful model of Spain or Barcelona", he suggested.

He is hoping ,the German teams above all have key players that are not German and if what he says were correct then following the English teams domination of the final stages of the C.L. the English national team would be unbeatable ,sadly it is not so.

However I wish the German team well in every game except when it is against England ,maybe we will meet in the final in 2014 :-).

A Merry and peaceful Christmas to you all have fun, we will clash in comments again afterwards I'm sure.

Keep dreaming Englishted. England will never make it to the finals. The lowly Americans have more of a chance.
16:48 December 23, 2012 by ChrisRea
"a totally new system based on the successful model" - so is it totally new, or does it have some common traits with another model? :)

@ Steve1949

England has a good chance to play the final. Unless, of course, it does meet Romania on the way (in the last 40 years or so they have not once win against the East Europeans).
17:52 December 23, 2012 by raandy
Why not? stranger things have happened, hope it doen't come down to Germany and Italy. We been there before.

Yes ofcourse Deutschland can win a world cup if only it can exorcise itself of this demon of throwing away chances at the last minute.

@ChrisRea

9 June 2012 Donbass Arena England 10 Ukraine

They are East European and that was in the Euros this year.

@Steve1949

I like to dream ,but I think we will be at the finals at least.
13:38 December 24, 2012 by gorongoza
Its interesting to listen to people`s dreams. How on earth can somebody scale England`s chances against any team in the world cup today?

Soccer in England today is only played in the newspapers and the social media - that is when it comes to the world cup.

Otherwise you Englanders you better stick to your FA games - that where you end.
13:51 December 24, 2012 by ChrisRea
@ Englishted

Sorry, I was probably not clear enough. I did not mean any East Europeans, but the ones that I mentioned in the same sentence, namely Romanians. England got a draw when they were lucky, otherwise they gracefully lost against Romania (in the last 40 years, to avoid further misunderstandings).
14:41 December 24, 2012 by Englishted
@ChrisRea

Got you and you are correct.

@gorongoza

"Otherwise you Englanders you better stick to your FA games - that where you end."

It is also where it all began ,so you should be thankful.

P.S. Where was your land in the Olympic medal table then?
16:05 December 24, 2012 by gorongoza
Considering the resources chanelled towards this goal my land was in a far much better position than England on the Olympic table.

I have to mention it though; the aim of my comment was not to discuss about my land and England. It was to close the beaks of such guys as you who parade themselves on this forum as though the Germans whom you are talking about have no ears or have no fingers capable of pointing back to you.
00:00 December 25, 2012 by Englishted
@ gorongoza

I am I given to understand by your comment you are German ?,strange that you use the term soccer though.

If so please point out any disrespect I have shown to Germany in my comments where as you insulted the English for no reason I can see.
07:16 December 25, 2012 by gorongoza
@ Englishted.

If you felt somehow offended by my comment I am sorry for that.

I, however , should point out that nowhere in my comments is there an insult to "the English" as you put it. By "the English" I presume you are referring to your nation. I always treat every nation with respect - although this may not be the case with you guys.

To make it clearer to you my comment sitting at #8 merely emphasize my observation and opinion of soccer ( sorry, FUSSBALL) in your camp.

I am wondering if your complaint , rather accusation, is not the typical babyish cry well known for you guys. If that is the case ,I am afraid you guys you better stay home when it comes to the world cup - its always a man`s game.

Germany sent seven professional teams into European competition and for the first time all seven made it to the knock out round that begin in the new year.Revenues are way up and the leagues are profitable.

With other European countries suffering from austerity cut backs Germany is investing more into football and stadiums, training programs than ever before.

I think the Germans will most likely dominate the sport for some time to come.They have a lot of home grown tallent relying less on imports. They can afford to pay more while others now are paying less.They invested in preparation for the 2006 world cup some where around 2 billion euros into stadiums,resulting in increasing spectators and putting the money back into homegrown programs for player development with out creating debt.

I think we will see more and more German dominance of the sport in the future.
