Klinsmann considering taking US citizenship

USA head football coach Jürgen Klinsmann is considering taking American citizenship despite having played in West Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning team and later coaching the German national side, he has admitted.

The 48-year-old, who has trained the US team since July 2011, lives with his family in Huntington Beach, California, and says he enjoys life Stateside.

"It is quite possible that in the future I will take American citizenship," he told German daily Bild. "I need to have plenty of time for it, it's a lengthy process."

But Klinsmann, coach of the Germany side which finished third in the 2006 World Cup, said his true home was still Stuttgart.

His USA team will host the German national team in Washington DC next June 2 as part of Germany's two-match tour.

"I'm really looking forward to that, I'll be able to see everyone again," he said."And we can show Germany what we have achieved with football in the USA."

Klinsmann made 108 appearances for Germany, scoring 48 goals in the process, between 1987 and 1998. "Football here may have caught up with other sports, but it is not the top sport here and I can still live here relatively anonymously," he said.

I don't blame him. If he's going to live in the USA on a semi-permanent basis, it makes sense to have the rights and protections of a US citizen.

Besides, the Amis more or less allow doppelte Staatsbürgerschaft. They won't confiscate his German passport or require that he sign a pledge renouncing his German citizenship. It's the Germans who don't allow dual citizenship.

The US doesn't allow dual-citizenship after age eighteen....legally. There's probably 200k Americans walking around with various other citizenships, but they are simply waiting for someone to figure this out and invalidate one of their citizenships.

I don't blame him either. If your business interest is in the US.....then it's best to stay here. I'm guessing that he runs various soccer training camps and makes a healthy income off that.

Will he be stripped of the name "Jürgen" along with the German citizenship?

He will now be known under George Klinton.

Pepsionice - Both Germany and the US allow dual citizenship (refer to section III. American-German Dual Nationality, parts 1 and 2 at http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/dual_nationality/ ). I know this because I was born a dual citizen of the US and Germany (as were my brother and sister) through my mother being a German citizen and my father an American citizen. I am not required to renounce either citizenship and I can carry passports for both countries. It is only naturalized citizens of either country that have to renounce their former citizenship (which would be the case with Klinsmann).

dbblfan that is correct.

Klinsmann has found out that when you are in the high middle class in America it don't get any better than that, nowhere.

From the U.S. State Department website:

"A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth. U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. . .

However, dual nationals owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country. They are required to obey the laws of both countries. Either country has the right to enforce its laws, particularly if the person later travels there. Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country."

It looks like it's possible for J.K. to become a naturalized American and keep his German passport, from the U.S. perspective.

Hunttington Beach, wow cool I wonder if he knows Tito Ortiz the MMA champion?

It sounds like a Good idea, you can still go back to Germany any time you want and outside of California it truely is the land of the Free and the home of the Brave. I thank God for that every time I come home from a trip overseas.

We have cheap readily available assault rifles, pistols, cheap cars, Makers Mark and Wild Turkey 101 Whiskey, Cheerleaders, MMA fights, loud Stereos, wide screen Cable TV, legal swords and battle axes,Ultimate Fight Club,Bar-b-que, Marlin Fishing, jet skis, Harley Davidon Motorcycles, Fast Food, girls in bikinis etc, etc.

The place is pefect, ever since we ran off the King in 1776, you get to make your own laws and everything. This place is better than Disney World and Disney World is in it,better than perfect, it's paradise where you can do almost anything you want if you live far enough from your neighbors!

You can even hire some foreigners to do your work, so you can spend more time hanging out with your buddies in MMA Fight trunks and shower thongs drinking beer and playing x-box. Who wouldn't want to be a part of all this.
