Shit hits the fans at Bundesliga match

Published: 16 Aug 11 14:05 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/sport/20110816-36991.html

Bundesliga matches took bizarre and unappetising turns at the weekend, with a Hoffenheim employee blasting Borussia supporters with a high-pitched siren – and Cologne fans showering their Schalke rivals with faeces and urine.

A TSG 1899 Hoffenheim worker faces disciplinary procedures after admitting on Monday he had set up loudspeakers in the visitors’ stands and activated them whenever they had started to chant offensive slogans against his football club’s president Dietmar Hopp.

Media reports over the weekend included puzzled references to a shrill, deafening noise which would blast out across the Borussia Dortmund fan block whenever they started chanting anti-Hopp abuse.

Now a Hoffenheim employee has admitted setting up sirens in the visitors’ stands, and activating them whenever they started shouting. He said he did not appreciate how loud they would be, and claimed he had meant it to be a joke.

The police have now become involved after an official complaint of bodily harm from a Borussia fan who said he suffered earache after the match.

Schalke 04 fans meanwhile might have chosen a howling siren given the choice – at their team’s match against 1 FC Köln over the weekend, some were showered with faeces and urine by the opposition.

The police confirmed on Tuesday that at least one person in the Köln fan block had been seen ‘placing’ faeces into a plastic beer glass and then throwing it at his rivals. The solid organic missile was followed by at least two urine-filled plastic beer glasses.

“We as a club obviously distance ourselves from these people,” said a spokesman for 1 FC Köln fans. “This behaviour is not acceptable. There cannot be two opinions on this.”

Love the headline!

Awww, Come on people! It's a friggin' game. A game; a meaningless game! Besides the pansy players constantly throwing themselves down to fake an injury every time a slight breeze goes by, the fans are the most repulsive thing about football. Does FIFA not care that football stands look like an ape-house on a good day, and could be far more lucrative and respectable if it were even slightly civilized.

Stay classy, soccer fans!

Careful there, @expatriarch. I think the apes might find that offensive.

Dear The Local Editor,

"Loudspeaker" is one word. Otherwise it's just a loud speaker.

That takes the german expression "I poop on you" to a new level.

LOL!

Wow. Professional journalism here. "The Local" has policies on expletives used by those commenting and delete inappropriate "verbage", but it is OK to use them in their own headlines. Double standards and a low degree of professionalism.

The local has hit an all new low in reporting. A complete disgrace to Germany.
02:13 August 17, 2011 by zeddriver
@farmon

I disagree. It happened and it was reported. How is that low for a news site?

I think the German football fans have hit a new low. For a people to be so emotionally involved in a game that some thought it a good idea to crap in a cup and bring it to a game to throw it at another person is just beyond compare. It is a complete disgrace.

Being new to Germany. I was actually looking forward to going to a football game. But as I would like to watch a game instead of looking over my shoulder awaiting an attack. I think it wise not to go. And watch baseball on sky tv.

Best "The Local" headline ever.

But prosecuting that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim worker? Doesn't the Staatsanwalt have something better to do?

Interesting that if any of us tried to reply by quoting the headline to this story, the Censorbot would reject it.

Something of a double standard, hmm???
07:34 August 17, 2011 by poppet
I reckon the Local thought of the headline and then set up the fans so they could use 'their' headline.

@rfwilson: "Something of a double standard, hmm??? "

Totally! Great point.

Fooball fans must be mentally ill. I mean no sane person would pay to be surrounded by low life and showered with excrement and expletives. And just to watch a bunch of overpaid prima donnas kicking a bag of air around. To each and all of the sad creatures I say-get a life.
