Kaiser's pulls frozen lasagnes for testing

Published: 11 Feb 13 16:54 CET | Print version

German supermarket chain Kaisers pulled its own brand frozen lasagnes from shelves to check for horse meat after British supermarkets detected up to 100 percent horse in their beef ready meals, it emerged on Monday.

News magazine Der Spiegel found out that Kaiser's had removed their basic brand, A&P, lasagnes out of the freezers and sent them off for testing last Wednesday in the wake of horse meat being discovered in countless products on sale in England.

While there was no evidence to suggest that there was horse meat in the products, a spokeswoman told the paper, the chain had decided to withdraw them on “consumer protection” grounds.

The supermarket was, she added, still waiting on a reply. The origin of the meat used to make Kaiser's A&P products remained unclear.

British watchdog the Food Safety Association said that there could be a chance of horse meat in ready-made products on sale in Germany as experts found it in food on sale in UK branches of German supermarket chain Aldi.

A French company delivering that particular dish to UK branches of Aldi also apparently delivered to German ones.

“There is no evidence to suggest that falsely labelled products containing horse meat are on sale in Germany,” the Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection told the magazine.

Is "the Consumer Ministry " dreaming?

The French company delivered to Europe ,the meat did not come from France but from the east of Europe .

There are possibilities that it is donkey as well as horse and may be connected to the flood of horses and donkeys being slaughtered in Romania following a law being enforced banning horse/donkey carts from the roads (I kid you not ).

German bury your head in the sand tactics again.

This was always a danger of this happening with the ever increasing demand for cheaper and cheaper meat. The market just wants cost cutting and so long as nobody knows then all is OK. This scandal first came to light in Ireland with the discovery of Beef burgers containing large quantities of horse meat. It is alleged the suspect meat came from Poland. My own thoughts are that this is a wide spread problem and now that the $h1t has hit the fan all the meat suppliers and food supermarkets are ducking to avoid the flying §h1t.

@ Berlin fuer alles, I agree with your statement. Fortunately, it isn't harmful like mad cow or something like that, heck, some of the best salami is made with donkey and horse meat, listed in the ingredients.

I've ate horse knockwurst. And I didn't die. I think it's just the thought of eating an animal that most keep as pets. But of course it should be properly labeled to give one the choice. They are reacting like it's some sort of health hazard.

Oh, I am outraged! Horse/donkey carts are banned from national and European roads in Romania? You don't say! So does that mean they can use only village roads? How can that be possible?

I am curious who launched the rumour that the respective law was only recently enforced. Could it be the French food-industry officials? Or directly the French company involved, confronted with the fact that somebody in the industry could never take horse meat for beef?

Note to American haters:

Looks like McDonalds' standards are set higher than EU.

Maybe they would taste better with a little horse,

P.S. I'm not a American hater but no fan of McDonalds either.

LOL @ Englishted.

Sometimes I think I have bet on a burger when I go horse racing at Hoppegarten. German racing is totally lacking in athmosphere in comparison to the UK, Ireland and France.

Go vegan people. Meat is killing you slowly anyway. Read the China Study. Should be required reading for the entire industrial world.

@ichbines

Just what we really need isn't it ichbines. More people on the planet. Just think. 5 billion old folk on pension and in nursing homes. With only 3-4 billion and falling who have to pay for it based on the low birth rates. No thanks. Anyway. We have two types of teeth in our mouths. incisors (for meat) as well as molars (for salads) I'd say a balanced approach is best.

I Suggest "the person" whom wrote the report is given a geography lesson forthwith.
