Germans lose their thirst for beer

German beer consumption has hit the lowest point since 1990, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

The Federal Statistics Office said Germans brewed 96.5 million hectolitres of their national beverage in 2012, down nearly two percent from the year before.

"This was the lowest amount since reunification," the office said in a statement.

A quarter of the country's beer was made in the densely populated state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Bavaria, home of the legendary beer festival Oktoberfest, only came second, accounting for 22.9 percent of all German beer.

Despite Teutonic beer's international reputation, nearly 84 percent of the amber nectar was consumed within Germany's borders.

Perhaps most disheartening for traditional German beer lovers, mixtures including cola and juice made up 4.5 percent of total beer volume.

So? Were people drinking very little beer in 1990? I don't think so.

German beer is good, but American Mirco-Brew is better!

Americans visiting Germany haven't lost their taste for beer. I will have to drink more at Oktoberfest and do my part to increase the beer consumption. PROST

I think it reflects a greater attention to health issues.

@Lykurgus - "German beer is good, but American Mirco-Brew is better!"

Have you tried German micro-breweries?
14:58 January 30, 2013 by raandy
whiteriver I agree, I am a beer drinker ,however. All the flats in my building are owned, When I throw a bottle away in the green container I am amazed at the number of wine bottles there, they are picked up weekly and full again the next time.Eight flats.

My wife use to always ask me when I got a beer out of the frig, How many is that?, I said would it be better to drink wine? and took her to the green container.-:)

I will have plenty of German beer this weekend while I party in Sachsenhausen! I have never met a German beer that I didn't like!!!

@Lykurgus - I agree with you 100% - the tradition of German brewing has left Germany behind the rest of the world when it comes to beer, even Italy has a better selection of beer these days with microbreweries popping up all over the place

@michael4096 - I have yet to try a German microbrew that was better than American microbrews - if you have some ideas, please share!!

To me German beer is good, but boring sure there are different kinds, but in reality they're not all that different from each other. Belgium has a much better selection of beer to choose from!

Don't know what the fuzz is? Booze like many other things are just brain washed in to many People as the thing to do. It doesn't matter if it does not taste as good as a nice Coffee. Same goes for SEX. Intelligently thinking of it. Sex is for re production and not just something to be thought of as leasure pleasure time. Humans tend to forget to put things in to context and yet we pretend to be sooooo intelligent......

Thanks for sharing the sites.. but looking at them they just look like same old same old.. I wouldn't really make a special trip to drink a different dunkles that tastes like any other... I would however suggest Braukunst Live which takes place from March 8-10 in Munich. You'll find a few actual micro brews and not just another helles in a different skirt, though some of the major breweries are also there selling their boring beer.

It is not just the beer that matters, it is the beautiful woman delivering it as well. If she is not so beautiful when she brings your first Maß, keep ordering more until she is.
