Women stage topless protest in Ikea

A group of young female activists staged a topless protest in the living room department of a Hamburg Ikea on Wednesday evening, in a stand against the company's use of “discriminatory advertising.”

The three women, aged 32, 23 and 22, entered the furniture store fully clothed. In the toilets, they removed their tops and painted German flags over their breasts and daubed feminist messages across their torsos, before taking to the shop floor.

Staff and shoppers at the Hamburg branch watched for ten minutes before security ushered the protesters out, the Bild daily reported.

Taking a stand against Ikea cutting women out of its Saudi Arabian catalogue, the trio belonged to the German branch of feminist movement Femen.

“You can remove us from the catalogue but you cannot remove us from reality,” said a placards. “Allah made me visible,” said another.

“We painted our breasts in Germany's colours because we are protesting for women,” graphic designer Irina, 32, told the paper. “Our bodies are painted like posters, but they cannot be ripped up,” she added.

Femen began in Ukraine, where women have regularly staged nude protests against repression and violence.

"Islamist dollars are more important than human principles of liberty and equality for Ikea," said a statement on the Femen website. It added that activists were calling for the world community to boycott the company's products.

I wonder why it took security so long to react to this? Hmmm, let me think... Thinking... thinking...

Protesting nude is probably a good way to gain attention, but I wonder if self-objectification is the way to go for protesting feminism. Women shouldn't have to expose their breasts to be heard.

They should protest the sex slave problem in their own lamer country instead.

Or, maybe they don't think its a problem, given their lack of modesty?

Two suggestions: 1. Get a job, or 2. Don't buy in IKEA and relax.

I'm going to Ikea soon.

its equality for everybody or equality for nobody.......hats off..I mean bra's off to those lovely ladies!

So you go around painting your breasts but then say you do not want to be treated like a sex object.....riiiight.

By the way? I have LIVED in Saudi Arabia. It is a little known FACT in the west that women have a FAR better life in Saudi Arabia than men. In Islam WOMEN are BY FAR better taken care of physically than men. Islam is a VERY sexist religion in that it places women FAR above men due to the females ability to have children.

Anyone who has actually LIVED in Saudi Arabia is well aware that it is the MEN who are most heavily discriminated against BY FAR.

Yes, the women in Saudi Arabia are so far above men that they are not allowed to drive a car. It was the only country to score a zero in the category of political empowerment by the World Economic Forum 2009 Global Gender Gap Report.

A land without women drivers? Yeah, sounds horrible. No hillary clintons? I want to go to there!

Man, American women really need to take some hints from Europe on how to protest. The best I get here is a bunch of anarchists that draw chalk on the street.

Who let them out of the kitchen area?

@Peter-bla-bla-bla

LOL, the stuff one comes up with to justify stone age discrimination. I can only believe what you're saying is an intentional joke.

That said, Zimbabwe was on the Human Rights Commision at the UN, so anything is possible...

I fail to see what getting ones t--ts out all off time achieves. Not that i am complaining.

Off all the protest weirdos these have to be my favourites.

I have the distinct impression that some women are just out for a reason to take their tops off. I fail to see how going 'oben ohne' will impact Ikea beyond a very minor and vaguely amusing distraction or how it will help the catalog-'disappeared' women of Saudi Arabia.

Women of the world unite! The shakers and movers of the world are looking to outer space (the moon, Mars, asteroids, etc..) for the next area to dominate via billions of dollars in rare mineral wealth and real estate, which in turn dominates political power and lawmaking.

Women need to make sure they have a voice as "Space laws" that are presently being created. Equality for women (and others) will be last in line, as those "ahead of the curve" are already formulating rules that guarantee their enrichment from property that is owned by every human being on earth.

Popping breasticles out is a nice start, but assuring that their great granddaughters realize equal rights in the Universe could be brought into the discussion, so that the goals achieved are not short sighted. Every human owns a piece of the universe, do not let runaway enterprising capitalistic male billionaires divert your attention so you lose sight of their intentions to keep you jumping thru thier silly little hoops, decades from now.

Making sure that each female in every country has access to a computer and means to a cell tower should be foremost, so that your message is heard worldwide. Setting up a female United Nations like organization may be necessary, to centralize funding, education and crowd sourcing specifically from females.
