100 arrests as Muslims clash with far-right

Published: 6 May 12 12:57 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20120506-42379.html

The conflict between a far-right political party in western Germany and Salafist Muslims grew violent again on Saturday, with some 100 people arrested and two police officers stabbed at a protest in Bonn.

About 30 members of the anti-Islamic “Pro NRW” party, holding up cartoon images of the Prophet Mohammed, faced off with 500 to 600 Salafist counter-demonstrators outside the King Fahd Academy in Bonn.

The Salafists, members of a fundamentalist branch of Islam, reportedly threw rocks at the police, who had positioned themselves between the two groups. The police ended the demonstration after about 45 minutes.

Two police officers were also seriously injured with stab wounds and were treated at a nearby hospital. The suspected attackers were reportedly arrested at the protest. Another 27 police officers were also injured.

The “Pro NRW” party has said it intends to send activists to 25 mosques throughout the state in the run-up to the state election in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 13, staging protests in Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Aachen, Wuppertal and Solingen.

Last week, a state court lifted a prior ban on the group using Mohammed caricatures in its election campaign, despite criticism that the images were purely being used for provocation.

The incident follows a similar protest on Tuesday, when 81 people were arrested in Solingen after violence broke out during a protest of Salafist Muslims against “Pro NRW.” The group had set up a stand showing cartoons of Mohammed outside a mosque.

German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich of the Christian Socialist Union (CSU), has been in touch with state officials in the past week, hoping to find a way to deescalate the situation.

“[Salafism’s] fanatical members represent a special danger to German security,” he told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag. “The Salafists deliver the ideological basis for many who then become violent.”

North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Ralf Jäger, speaking on WDR television, blamed the far-right extremists for their targeted provocation of the Salafists. At the same time, he emphasized the peacefulness of the vast majority of Muslims in the western state.

"Pro NRW," which boasts 250 members, has said it is also planning to award a cash prize for the "best" anti-Islamic caricature, named after Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard. Westergaard was responsible for the controversial 2005 images of Mohammed, including one of him wearing a bomb in his turban.

The group has used Westergaard’s images in previous protests in Essen and Gelsenkirchen, before a ban was placed on their use. Westergaard has distanced himself from the group, saying he believes only in freedom of speech and is in no way affliated with them.

I wonder if Mr Jager will blame the NRW for the stabbings as well?

I am a far left, but I like the Muhammad Cartoons, this is the freedom of express, they can just react by doing Cartoons of Secularism, or whatever they don't like!
15:55 May 6, 2012 by Craptastic
You're a smart guy, Alanm. Unfortunately, some people aren't aware that freedom of religion and freedom of speech do not include a freedom from being offended.

Additionally, a provocation to violence is when someone tells you they are going to kill you or beat you or some loved one and not when they show a picture you don't like. Who remembers the artist who put the crucifixion picture behind urine?

You can counter protest, but you don't get to harm people. Stupid bastards are playing right into the hands of the Pro-NRW who want to be able to say with authority that the Salafists are violent thugs. Well, idiots, you proved them right didn't you? You don't understand how to function in a democracy.

How pathetic is all this . People injecting their lives with fantasy and drama all in the name of this or that brainless belief based cause to justify their existence . Then pounding each other in some illogical social demonstration against each other and inflicting injury on the poor riot police who have to protect both misguided parties.

@gunnyboy: Why I am not astonished again at the garbage and hate being spread here. You are quoting Quran and Hadith out of hte context. Why did you not show these Sayings where it is clearly forbidden to kill women and children and chose the words in the wrong context to sesrve your purpose.

[Sahih Muslim Book 019, Hadith Number 4319]

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah that a woman was found killed in one of the battles fought by the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). He disapproved of the killing of women and children.

[Sahih Muslim Book 019, Hadith Number 4320]

It is narrated by Ibn 'Umar that a woman was found killed in one of these battles; so the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade the killing of women and children.

Problem is that the people like you just take the things without explanations and start spreading hate on forums like this. I can also explain you the verse from Quran that you are quoting out of context , but I am 100% sure it will not change anything on this forum as I have seen dozens of time before. I can just pray that God guide u to the right path. Ameen..

I don't need a book to tell me what's right and wrong.
20:42 May 6, 2012 by gunnyboy
@munichscool

You do not have to teach me. I have gone through all the teachings from madrassas in my childhood. I know the holy books well enough to understand what each word and context means.

The hadiths you quote talk about BATTLES, and the hadith I quoted talked about NIGHT RAIDS. Night raids are also UNPROVOKED acts of rioting.

I am only quoting your books. Those are not my words. So why are you angry? You should be angry at Imam Muslim for having documented these.

If you really think that those verses do not belong to your books, start a movement to cleanse your religion (my ex-religion) of those hate-causing teachings. That is better than trying to use Taqqiyya (deception) and Kitman (concealment of truth) because people are slowly waking up to the truth.

Go and teach those Salafists who use your books to their advantage rather than fooling innocent people by saying that yours is a religion of peace.

I am amazed at how tolerant the German government, and unfortunately the German people, are of a political message based on hatred by the neonazis of a religious group, and even the protection and promotion of the active display of such hatred. It would have been great if Germany had matured as a result of its antisemitic history towards a revocation of such hatred against any religious group. There are German laws restricting such "freedom of expression" when it comes to hatred against Jews. This seems to be misinterpreted by Germans as meaning that it is ok to hate everyone else!! I suppose revisiting the educational system in Germany may be helpful, in a way that would try to instil some values that do not encourage hatred and provocation to those who they consider as being "lesser" cutlures, as is evident from the posts above. This would enable Germany to fully reintegrate into the civilized world.

munichiscool, what a cop out, why can you not put it into context? this appears to me to be an ideal opportunity for someone who can speak with authority and go some way to counter apparent misconceptions which lead to mistrust and ultimately hate. Why not at the same time give us a muslims view of apostasy?

@CensorThis - I have all respect for most aspects of German culture, but I feel a little disturbed by the granting of official and popular legitimacy to a platform based on hatred, that's it. I am neither an expert on German nor Islamic affairs, but I am merely commenting as an external observer of how this issue has evolved. It is evident that the salafists broke the law and should be arrested and prosecuted for it; but this does not exonerate the original acts of hatred that seem to be supported by the masses, and would definitely not be supported in the US and many other western countries. I am hopeful that some Germans will also stand up against such hatred. Perhaps this is happening on other online fora but I did not see it on this one.

©ldcfriend this news is another example of extremist mind. Read the same news at general anzeiger Bonn, where this actually happened and you will come to know what actually happened and who first throw the stone and even from police statement published there. This site is well known for promoting extremism among or society here.instead of spreading love they are promoting this kind of news. I am proud German and i am representing 100% views of my friends etc. no haterous and respect for all. Why to do something intentionally just to hurt other people? What's the gain? Dialogue for all problems. Do by publishing karikratuer are we hurting minority of extremist or a quite big audience of our own people?

I think big rule had to be played by media. Please stop exaggerating the stuff and promote good things of others as well.

Germany has many rules and regulations which gives outsiders the impression that it is strict. As I'm sure that those who live here will agree, that it isn't actually so. Actually, the country functions largely on people playing nice with each other. Although there are many rules about, for example, people being quiet in their apartments, in practice apartment living is very peaceful because people are naturally quiet and respect the space of those around.

However, this mentality is open to abuse.

Surely, the issue here has nothing to do with religion, free speech or ideology but a preparedness to live and let live. Germany finds it hard to cope with those that are prepared to incite or respond with violence. It isn't the German way.
13:32 May 7, 2012 by FreedomLover
It's absolutely appalling to me, that critique of religion meets with such mindless aggression and violence. Where has the Spirit of Enlightenment gone? What has been done to the Spirit of liberation of Human Being from the power of the clergy and religious creed? There were fierce battles for freedom of speech and conscience, a lot of fighting for the right to speak "I believe in no God", "I believe in many Gods" or "I believe in God in my own manner". In our times, it's even acceptable in most European countries to desecrate eg. Christian symbols; while so much ranting about Muslim ones? Why can't one openly say their stance about Islam and Quran?

While I have absolutely no problem with peaceful Muslims, they do NOT attack the folks who display caricatures. Moreover, some ex-Muslims were among the ones who participated in the display. On the other hand, Salafists are NOT just Muslims, they are Islamists, that is, holders of the ideology of Islamism, that is similiar to nazism in many ways, especially with regards to its totalitarian character (for a Salafist, everything must be done, regulated and judged according to the harsh, medieval interpretation of islamic law; all kinds of religious liberalism and modernism are prohibited within this movement, secular democracy is NOT accepted by them, too).

This is NOT hatred to tell there are dangerous islamists in Europe, when THEY ACTUALLY ARE THERE. And it is NOT about spreading hatred towards the Muslims, as Muslims as such are NOT guilty for the excesses of extremists, no more than socialists may be guilty for national socialism or stalinism (and no, they are NOT guilty of this).
13:53 May 7, 2012 by herzlich
Well it is gonna be a never ending story. Its like all about respect and love. If you love your parents you would not accept any insult of them especially when they are not guilty of anything. Not a single person will tolerate this that i go to public with Shameless caricatures of their parents etc.

One has to understand the respect and love. Even if peaceful Muslims will not react but aren't that hurted?? Is there are not other issues left??

One should protest against the people who are against our society. Who are corrupting our country, Who are earnign black. who are not paying taxes etc. But by prevailing the unrest , that is the cheap election tact and you will see the election results how we majority thinks :)
14:09 May 7, 2012 by FreedomLover
but religion is not like one's parents. Religion is a set of ideas, that might be followed by some, renounced by others and criticised by another ones. It's unacceptable to prohibit critique of ideas. A lot of people have followed Volkisch supremacist (no, not nazi, but 19th century Volkisch) mindset, too, and are emotionally tied to it; does it mean it shouldn't be criticised or caricatured because it hurts their feelings?

Also, almost everyone is a parent to someone else, does it mean he or she should be spared from criticism because of this? Should we not caricature and ridicule politicians because they usually have children who may feel offended (and they usually do)?

Moreover, if one was to take the idea of not caricaturing religious persons seriously, Christians and Muslims would have to change their creed, as they do often abuse and ridicule Satan, who is a sacred being for a lot of Satanists, Occultists, Sethians, etc. So Muslims should renounce symbolic stoning of him, Christians should do without anti-Satan rhetoric of Jesus, St. Paul and Evangelists, etc. There is absolutely NO reason while Satanists are to be discriminated against their religious rights.
14:39 May 7, 2012 by herzlich
@FreedomLover, you can crticise on religion but why to make fun of Prophet which Muslims believe and respect more than parents?? If you have problems with the religion sit down and dialouge but by insulting what you gonna get? You are right why statue or even symbolic strucutre of SHIAATAN but should not be this kind of things be discussed in a mannered way without insulting someone???

You wrote very nicely. All people can read that. But what if you start insulting and abusing?? you will get something other then a simimlar response??

One's freedom of speech ends when it starts violating others. Now limits has to be set. If someone is culprit and proven guilty u can blame him but if someone thinks, the other one is guilty that has no grounds.

Lets prevail love and peace. Show love earn love. do respect get respect. Roten eggs are everywhere. They are above to nationatlies , societies and religions. So target ROTEN EGGS not a General Circle.

Why does the German version of the Local delete so many comments compared to the Local editions for other Euro countries? Is this an example of the authoritarianism that led to the nazi's rise to power? Don't you see that such deletions mean that the mentality is in place for totalitarianism to again rise in Germany?

What the salafists show is that they're incapable of living in a free society. You know, they can't see that most people 'suffer the slings and arrows;' that is, life may be bad, but death likely worse. They need to adapt (perhaps, to some extent, adopt) to Western mores and learn to be religious in a secular society.

As for the gov't of Germany banning the display of Westergard's cartoons, sheesh. How is this different from nazi book burnings? Please see the first paragraph of this post.

As for Jager's comment about most most muslimes being peaceful, heck, what about most of the non-muslime Germans who didn't show up at all? Shouldn't he have commented favorably upon this behavior of such Germans? How much pandering will the West do to muslimes? This pandering won't bring peace or change attitudes.

Remember osama bin laden's comment to the effect that muslimes follow the stronger horse. Thank God for the USA in this regard. And blessed be it that the last words heard by OBL were spoken to him by his American executioner.
