Munich court stops 'Mein Kampf' reprint

A German court has banned a British publisher from printing extracts of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf," upholding a ruling that doing so would break copyright laws.

Peter McGee, who planned to publish parts of the anti-Semitic book alongside commentary from historians, vowed to appeal against the decision but said he would respect the ruling and refrain from publication for now.

The court in the city of Munich ruled in favour of the southern state of Bavaria, which holds the rights to all publications from the main Nazi publishing house and had sought to block the book's appearance.

"He has been dead for 70 years but Adolf Hitler is still keeping the courts busy," the regional court in Munich said in a statement.

Confirming an earlier decision from January, the court concluded: "To shorten a work and add explanations and comments does not give rights over the... published original work."

McGee said he "regretted the ruling and would appeal to a higher court".

"We respect the decision of the regional court and will refrain from putting 'the unreadable book' - a scientific essay about Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' with quotes from this work - onto news-stands," he said.

"At the same time, we believe the court's decision was wrong."

"Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle"), written when Hitler was languishing in a Bavarian prison, combines elements of autobiography and sets out his views on Aryan "racial purity", his hatred of Jews and his opposition to communism.

It is not banned as such in Germany but since the end of World War II, Bavaria - which holds the rights until 70 years after the dictator's death in 2015 - has not permitted reprints.

McGee has been involved in disputed projects in Germany before. In 2009, he caused a stir when he began selling reprints of the Nazi propaganda newspaper Völkischer Beobachter (People's Observer), again with comments from historians.

In that case, Bavaria launched a legal challenge to the series but succeeded only in blocking the sale of editions from after the war's outbreak in 1939.

Germany is still living in the shadows of the third reich! Instead it should move on, I think it is time to do so! If you have been in the auslanderamt recently you will be surprised if you are really living in Germany or some middle eastern country!

indeed, imagine seeing so many Foreigners at the Foreigner's Office. On that same note, I can't believe how the shelves at the library are so crowded with books and every time i go to the grocery store they have all this food laying about!

What exactly are the Germans or bavarians afraid of?There are some very good truths in certain chapters of this book,ie examining the workings of the Austrian parliament, which are as true today as they were at the time that they were written, and his views on keeping the people healthy. This banning of books seems quite ironic, considering that your modern marxist accuses the third reich of exactly that,it is the same mental prison that "satanic verses" found itself in,worldwide condemnation but few took the trouble to actually read it,and if it is alleged that mein kampf will turn us all into rabid nazis,we can cite the church of romes use of the bible to promote its own power, lust and the deaths of many millions, who fell foul of the auto da fe,but few would admit it.the only way of dealing with a ghost is to confront it,apply reason and move on.

The lack of freely available copies in circulation has not stopped far right politics in Germany.

It's ridiculous that a book outlining the ideology of a regime responsible for WW2 and the immeasurable death and misery of that period should not be freely available. It should be studied in secondary level school and above by all children.

Perhaps the Germans are less convinced than some Britons of their need to be schooled by the latter on this particular topic in history.

The german fatherland, culture and language is under attack from the new world order. Guilt placement onto young german minds when nazis are all almost deceased goes hand in hand with brainwashing. They want germans to be brainwashed so that this objective can be accomplished. Why keep a book banned when its easily downloadable? The new world order want to keep the memory of hitler alive so as to also keep the focus off of their own crimes.

Hello. This is the New World Order speaking!

I want @KLaus Stoiber to feel guilty for WWII so he does not notice my crimes!

I want @Freechoice to visit a jail and see if there are prisoners inside and conclude that Germany is being overrun by prisoners.

Hello. This is the New World Order speaking!

When I read Mein Kampf and Hitler wrote about the need to appeal to the ignorance of the masses, I now realize he was claire-voyant and speaking of you two.

Hello. THis is the New World Order speaking!

@SchwabHallRocks,

The New World Order fears a strong germany, just admit your fear. Oneday Germany will rise and take its rightful place in the world. Germans will advance to such an extent that we will colonise distant planets, and continue technological advances that we are so very famous for

As the fuhrer of the New World Order, I have learned that you are actually paid by The Local . De to say stoopid things to provoke lots of "comments" and attract more readers.

I am asking my minions now to investigate your tax returns.

Also, I am taking away your 4th Reich Secret Decoder Ring. (Thanks for the insight to Englsh Ted ;) )

Finally, since Germans are slowly becoming extinct and are not reproducing at replacement levels, you better hurry up and build that rocket ship. Auf Gehts!!! Los!!!

And, if you see John Carter en route to those distant planets, tell him I am waiting to hear from him!

All Hail the Fuhrer of the New World Order!!!

And Schwab Hall does ROCK!

"Das unlesebare Buch" (The unreadable book) describes it perfectly. I tried reading this pile of drivel one time and couldn't get past page 2. I did then browse through the rest of it to try and find something, anything interesting in it. I mean, a man who wrecked the whole of Europe and gave the Jews their own country and brought Stalin to Germany can't be all bad, can he?

It was the most unreadable, most uninspiring pile of dog-poo I have ever read in my life. The words "International Jew" appear more times than the word p*nis in Mr. Garrrison's novel. All I took away from it was that Hitler was an extremely uninteresting man. How the Germans lapped it up, I'll never know.

I guess every racist KKK biker and skinhead has a copy next to his bible. If so, it proves they either can't read or are simply too lazy. Maybe they should legalize it so people will see what a total crock it really is.

I must have been lucky when I flipped through MK and read the part about "appealing to the ignorance of the masses" because if Hitler did anything well, that was it. The Nurnberg rallies were quite dramatic and presumably effective as was the entire Nazi propoganda machine.

For what it's worth, the DVD is available on Leni Riefenstahl who created / filmed "Triumph of the Will" and other Nazi propoganda. It was originally released in the 1980s but is still fascinating for insight into Adolph and his gang and "appealing to the ignorance of the masses."

What happens after 2015? Does the copyright expire, the book enter the public domain, and anyone can publish it?
20:13 March 10, 2012 by Sayer
Interesting. Banned from printing because of copyright laws. Not because of content. Signs of hope for the emancipation of thought, again. I thought we'd already had that done and finished with on October 31st 1517!

Many of my relatives were killed at Auschwitz but I think most restrictions on "Mein Kampf", display of the NSDAP swastika, and the "Nazi salute" are totally counter-productive and moreover show that the German govt. at least just don't get it!
