Dortmund man named world's most-pierced

Published: 24 Nov 11 11:12 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20111124-39085.html

Weighed down with 453 piercings, a 52-year-old Dortmund man has officially been named the most-pierced person by the book of Guinness World Records.

What started with a single prick in 1999 quickly became a way of life for Deutsche Telekom employee Rolf Buchholz. On his face alone, Buchholz now has 170 rings and studs, 94 of which are on his lips.

More piercings can be found on his nipples and around his bellybutton. It is, however, Buchholz’s nether region which boasts the most metal, with around 270 piercings currently adorning his genitals.

Piercings quickly became a passion for Buchholz, who over the past decade returned time and time again to "Deep Metal" piercing studio in Dortmund. Each time he would leave with several new pieces of body jewellery.

"I’m often asked why I’ve done this," said Buchholz. But it seems it was neither for himself nor for the reaction provoked in others. Unable to give a concrete answer, he answered "I don’t know. There’s no real reason behind it."

Another common question Buchholz faces is whether the piercings hurt. No stranger to pain, however, he is covered head to toe in tattoos and has dozens of implants under his skin. Several hundred piercings were, therefore, no problem.

Buchholz has travelled far and wide on the hunt for body jewellery, and has recently returned from London where he received his Guinness World Record certificate. "I don’t have problems at airports though," he said. "The security scanners only go off occasionally."

And despite Buchholz’s fascination with body accessories, he’s never had a problem with relationships. "Kissing’s fine" he said, even with a heavily pierced tongue. Currently he’s single, but has found his piercings to be a hit with potential love-interests as he has "always got something to talk about."

His colleagues at Deutsche Telekom in Münster have witnessed Buchholz’s transformation from the beginning, as when he started work he didn’t have a single piercing. "They’ve all become used to it," he added.

Buchholz’s love affair with "Deep Metal" is being put on hold for now, however, as he does not have any new piercings planned.

How does he get on planes ? three hour delay at boarding .

Saw a TV report about that guy. He's a sad, confused human obviously being suffering under a rare form of compulsary act. His illness seriously harms his social life and makes him a lonely outsider. And that triggers yet another round of piercing which makes it even worse. He shouldn't get media attention but professional treatment!

That guy is not to be faulted, he's the victim of a mental illness. But the piercing studio should be closed by the authorities! They are acting totally irresponsible by "serving" this customer time and again despite his very obvious issues. No sense of human decency left, everything for profit?

The article mentions that he is a Deutsche Telekom employee. My question is how could any serious company employ someone like this. I don't know what exactly it is he does for them, but assuming that he works in an office I wonder how anyone can take him seriously at all. I can't imagine a company sending someone who has completely and deliberately destroyed his face like this to meet clients or customers?

How can anyone do something so dreadful as this to themselves?

This beggars belief...

@ frankiep

it is just one form of craze, to me it is as mad as women spending time and money painting little flowers on their nails .. how can you take those women seriously??

are piercings removable??

Obviously, this silly looking man does not own a mirror at home....

Just a form of self-mutilation. He is more to be pitied than scorned.

@frankiep - not all jobs have customer contact.

My first reaction was shock. Kinda the horror you experience with clown makeup, a gross distortion of the normal human face. Goes to show the pro-employee labor laws Germany has. I think a US firm would have found a way to dismiss him.

Hey Rolf, cancel the trip to CERN. You'd never come back.

"I don't have problems at airports."

I guessing he's never been in a US airport. TSA would make him take every one out, especially when he handed over a German passport.

His face sorta reminds me of the front of a 40's to 50's vintage American car. Lots of bling eh?

Sick & pathetic, people need motive & struggle in their lives & if comfortable social help system does the job for them they get busy doing this kinda nonsense!

How painful it must be to get these needles put in you. Does this cost a lot of money?
12:17 November 29, 2011 by Berliner Mauer
Good for him! Why people have to be so judgemental of this man's means of expression sickens me more than the thought of 270 piercings adorning his privates.
14:53 November 30, 2011 by ryand
Is it OK for me to stare at him like people used to at disabled/figured people?

As to the above commentators - hey, the guy pays taxes, he's doing whatever floats his boat and he's enjoying it w/o harming others. Are you aware that were it not for novelty seekers like him you'd all still be arboreal insectivores? Get a life.

Men... this guy has some issues to work... does he grounds himself? I mean, he works for a a telephone com-any and raining season is here what about lighting?
05:14 December 3, 2011 by strixy
Stop whining and leave him alone. This is nobody's business how he looks like. To those who wonder how DT could employ him - well, obviously he must be very good at whatever his job is. Do you really think that skills manifest themselves in appearance? After meeting dozens of underqualified, lazy and ignorant however 'proper' looking clerks, bank workers etc I have no doubt that resourting to looks when assessing someone's abilities is deceitful.

Nothing is wrong with showing some expressions. Each of us has something that we over-do on. Even if it is not something healthy. While we have our own opinions just be mindful that someone would say the same about thing things you do. At anyrate I would suggest reading more up on piercings and why people get them. Don't just read one news article and make up your mind. I was searching twitter and came across www.webpiercings.com. Seem like a very good source of information and it is a clean family friendly site unlike most.
