Your comments about this article:
1) ¦quot;Nobody expected it; that¦#39;s why there was no plan to do anything about it,¦quot;
Of course the West expected the East to close the border.
¦quot;I don¦#39;t understand why the East Germans don¦#39;t close their border,¦quot; Senator William Fulbright mused publicly in early August 1961. JFK also told Walt Rostow, ¦quot;Khrushchev is losing East Germany. . He will have to do something to stop the flow of refugees—perhaps a wall."
2) The "failed" Russian "Blockade" was a reaction to the West breaking the Potsdam accords and one-sidedly issuing a new currency in their sectors. The blockade, in fact, was a self-blockade. West Berliners were allowed to buy whatever they needed in the East: but then they would need the "old" Berlin currency or have to trade their new money at a fair rate. Those West Berliners who did in fact go shopping in the East during the blockade were considered traitors and treated as such.
3.) Although there had been many political splits in Berlin after 1945, the first physical division of the city was started by the WEST. In January 1953 they blocked all trams coming from the East from continuing to the West because the East allowed women to drive the streetcars! It was not until 1972 that the first women drivers were allowed in the West, by which time the West had destroyed the streetcar system as a perk to the auto lobby... That is why you see streetcars only in East Berlin today...
So at least inform us of what "interesting insights" you found in this article that re-hashes the official "dark day"?
For those who were unable to read it, Markov was responding to being tagged "Stasi/Communist-apologist" for his other post (which has not yet been removed). He then turned Aslanleon's insult around, using the phrase "American apologist" and countered the non-specific accusation of the "100 million dead" with a link to a site (google "killing hope") that very specifically lists the bombings and wars the USA has lead in the last 60 years.
His final remark slammed Aslanleon's acusation of "self-delusion" as something that the Americans are guilty of, i.e. launching these wars under the pretense of "freedom". "Be nice to the USA or we will bring democracy to your country" he wrote...
I found both the logic of Markov's response, as well his phrasing completely in order. It is especially ironic, that Markov's remarks about self-delusional concepts of "freedom" should then be censored by some overzealous (overly patriotic?) "moderator" here!
What better proof that Markov's criticism was spot-on!!!
