Two-thirds of Germans disagree with Sarrazin

Published: 3 Sep 10 13:50 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20100903-29591.html

Nearly two-thirds of Germans disagree with controversial central banker Thilo Sarrazin’s claim that rampant immigration is making Germany “dumber,” a poll released Friday has found.

A poll published by the news magazine Focus reported that 63 percent of respondents disagreed and 31 percent agreed with the proposition – a key claim in Sarrazin’s anti-immigration arguments that have sparked furious debate this week.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, meanwhile, told the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet in an interview published Friday that Sarrazin’s claims were “absurd.”

“They serve to divide. Whole groups in our community feel injured by this,” she said.

Merkel also said that integration was the most important issue of our time.

“We have to discuss it realistically and must not arouse antipathy and ill-will. That hinders integration instead of advancing it.”

While problems still existed, most Turks, who belong to the country's largest immigrant group, were well-integrated, she said.

Improvements would take efforts from the government, the community and immigrants themselves, she said.

“Living together is a matter of give-and-take,” she said. Immigrants must be prepared “to get involved in life within our community and to accept our legal system without reservation,” she said.

Merkel is one of many politicians who have elevated improved integration of Germany’s Muslim communities since Sarrazin sparked widespread condemnation with inflammatory interviews surrounding the launch of his book, “Abolishing Germany - How we’re putting our country in jeopardy,” on Monday.

The chairman of the interior committee of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Bosbach of Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), called for a “serious discussion to designate the progress and the problems of integration, without taboos.”

Though there were a million integration success stories, there were “also too many cases of refusal to integrate,” he told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

The SPD’s interior spokesman, Dieter Wiefelspütz, said integration was “the mega-issue of the next year” and needed to be pushed forward with greater effort.

“In particular, the federal Interior Ministry is too passive,” he told the same paper. It must finally put integration at the top of its agenda.”

President Christian Wulff, who was on Friday weighing a Bundesbank recommendation to sack Sarrazin, also weighed into the debate. He defended the vast majority of immigrants against Sarrazin’s charge that they were not interested in integrating into mainstream German society, but acknowledged there was pressing work to be done.

“The majority of newly arriving citizens participate successfully in integration courses,” he told the Mainz Allgemeine Zeitung.

But he added: “Failed efforts in integration must be made up for,” he said. And while that was partly the role of the government, “clear demands have to be expressed to migrants,” he said.

Sarrazin has claimed, among other things, that Muslim communities don’t want to integrate with mainstream Germany, that they are making the country “dumber” and that ethnic groups are distinguished by particular genes – for example that “all Jews share a certain gene.”

For the Focus poll, the firm TNS Emnid surveyed 1,001 people on September 1 and 2.

"accept our legal system without reservation,?" she said.

Even if that "legal system" is bigoted and discriminates against you. Typical condescending, maternalistic crap. Sarrazin wouldn't have lasted 24 hours in a civilized country.
14:39 September 3, 2010 by Eastard
The writer catjones must be mistaken... This article was not about how civilized the legal system is in a Muslim country... you know... where they stone you.
14:45 September 3, 2010 by hanskarl
"This article was not about how civilized the legal system is in a Muslim country... you know... where they stone you. " And where the men beat their wives with impunity and treat them like dogs and where honor killings are "honorable."

"Even if that "legal system" is bigoted and discriminates against you."

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Adolph Hitler is rising from the grave in the form of Thilo Sarrazin. It looks like this is the new direction where Germany is headed. If I were Poland, I would watch my ass and be very vigilant.

Two Polls that I have seen, say just the opposite, 90% agree with Sarrazin!

The truth is however, if the politicians, who now criticise this man, had done their job correctly, he would have little to write about.

German leaders have no idea what their own people need or think. To hunt down this man, is easier for them, than to take action against the circumstances which cause trouble between native Germans and their foreign guests.

Aren't we all tired of everyone naming the next Hitler... like some sort of scare tactic. This leader has an opinion and has expressed it... so what...? The debate is good.. Germans have the right to protest apparent changes in their country coming from outside influnce... I use the phrase protest... not deport.. If you think Germany is bad, try having 11 million people there that don't speak your language, that tie up the court system, the medical facilities, and make babies.... AND are not immigrants they are there illegally... To make it even better, the politicians kiss their butts (because they may become voters one day) ... and they openly protest being profiled.. I suggest the Germans be tolerant of and pay attention to the opinions... Seek content in some of what is said and push for a reasonable national policy that can be enforced.

A better title would be "One Third of Germans Bravely Agree with Embattled Sarrazin".

The Turks are not, and will never be German. Turkey is for the Turks, and Germany is for the Germans.

I believe that comment to mean that most of the immagrants are unskilled and uneducated. Therefore not contribiting to the over all economy, research and developement (Societal advancement) . I have seen where hard working immagrants have prospered. But I have also seen the same problem we have in America. Free loaders a class of people developed by politicians for votes. I love Germany and especially Bavaria. Boarders and pass ports. Visa's and enough money to support you and your family for at least one year if you want to live there. Also asimilate yourself into a new life and culture. Not try and change it. OK, let me have it!

Thilo speaks the truth that just does not want to be heard. Germany does not have to go the way of other European countries. It is not mandatory it be invaded by Asian/African migrants, with passive acceptance by it's European natives.

Do India, China, Japan, Iran, Nigeria have this challenge presented to them? Would they meekly submit? No, and no way. Try set up a German colony in Tokyo or Shanghai or Delhi and you would be ejected in an instant. No discussion. Too absurd to contemplate!

The 1930's is a very long time ago. So get over it and be proud of your people and their accomplishments. Give Europe some chance of a decent future. Don't listen to foreign opinions, because they are not interested in promoting German interests. Most people around the World see Germany as the leader. So don't allow second-rate aspirants to spoil the country.

Sarrazin is stating the obvious. That is all. German people and the culture should not be consigned to oblivion.

German politicians are a bunch of wooses. What Sarrazin says is as obvious as the nose on your face. The Moslems are "colonizing" and have no interest in assimilating since they feel they will be in charge real soon so why bother. Can you spell Sharia you German ostriches? Bending backwards not to offend, you are the true idiots.

"Two-thirds of Germans disagree with Sarrazin" (?)

Brainwashing attempt or half knowledge?

Two-thirds of Germans actually agree with him!
01:42 September 4, 2010 by BR549
First of all, there is no such thing as "truth"! Your reality in any situation is your reaction (or opinion) to a situation. Speaking in generalties will only open a door to contradict yourself. Sarrazin speaks in a manner to stimulate arguments to enahnce his bank account. At his age, there was plenty of time to "CRUSADE" for a cause....why did he wait so long to create an argument among the general population in Germany??? The equation is simple...$$$

"Judaism is making a comeback in Germany 65 years after the Holocaust, thanks largely to immigration from the former Soviet Union, as shown by this week?'s ordination of two rabbis in the eastern city of Leipzig."

What do you say to this? I am afraid 30 years later another Sarrazin or Hitler will blame Jews again for the problems in Germany. Don't forget that Germany invited Turks and other minorities 40 years ago for the labor force.

Integration problem, peehhh, why are the people easly integrated to USA but not Germany? Stop racism...
02:38 September 4, 2010 by Eagle1
Let's be honest. Germany produces some of the best goods, scientists, and minds in the world. What does Turkey produce? Turks. That's it. Integration would do them some good.
05:38 September 4, 2010 by ww77ww
I'd like to see the methodology and data used in this "poll".

Of course, the Swiss polled differently than they voted during the minaret soap opera several months ago.

When was the last time Germany had freedom of speech? 1932? Or before? Or never? It's certainly not 2010. Wulff should be ashamed of himself, yet another traitorous impotent "leader" sowing the seeds of future headaches. Sarrazin hit a taboo subject and those brainwashed by the politically correct generation of 68 rush to censor.

Maybe catjones is another ultra-liberal Brit who is upset Germany doesn't have Sharia courts and extra social welfare benefits going to certain polygamists like his home island - or whats left of it.

These polls mean nothing. Nobody makes their feelings on these issues plainly known until their daughter comes home with someone of a different skin color.
07:41 September 4, 2010 by JohnnesKönig
Who were the people polled? Germans or residents of Germany...

Last Summer when I had a holiday in Munich, a Deutsche Frau was so angry to my two kids who were chatting not in German and demanded them to speak German since "it was Germany here". Germans are travelling people, do any idiot in any country asked German tourists to speak local language? Germans are funny people who should stay home.

"...another ultra-liberal Brit who is upset Germany doesn't have Sharia courts and extra social welfare benefits going to certain polygamists like his home island - or whats left of it."

That is so true

Some posters here use the lowest standard to justify low standards. If Iran stones criminals, shouldn't we be allowed to discriminate against minorities?

Sure, we may be bigots, but at least we're not as bad as others. This is the logic of a coward.
11:58 September 4, 2010 by DinhoPilot
So much hate and hate spreading, speeches, comments, etc...

Germany is going well in terms of economics, labour, social but there are still mentality issues that don't allow them to progress.

Everyone one speaks about integration but it's not like Auslanders have it easy or equal opportunities (even when they speak fluently the language).

I will call it the german paradox.... They want people to "integrate", but they don't like when a curriculum shows up and has a "different" name. And that's just one example.

Attention, I'm not telling Germany should open the borders freely to immigration or immigrants, but its hard demand "if" the best job one can have is working in a kebab store or cleanning. I've seen many cases of people very well integrated, immigrants who study there, got their degrees with excelent grades, but still cause of some "xenophoby", where despised there. But I also know causes of "english" speakers who never did the effort to learn the language or try to integrate...

This is not a simple issue to come here and comment like you own the world. Get a grip. There are two side of the coins.
14:30 September 4, 2010 by ww77ww
There is a lot more to integration than simple language.

There is also no "logic" that a state has to succumb to massimmigration to be just or fair or defendable or right.

Regarding the "logic of a coward", there is nobody on this planet free of prejudice. Try this immigration mess in other lands and see how the locals accept it. Europe has no obligation to soothe the guilt in an idiotic few.

Come even we foreigners agree with Sarazin, maybe not with each and every point but we know that a lot of what he said is simply true. Germans would agree up to 90% but its not easy for them to admit it.

Germans have nothing against foreigners as such but some foreigners have a lot against Germany and the Germans and they do their best to live here but create their own circle, own shops, keep their own language and make sure they do not mix in marriage and if one or two wonder out of the herd, then we may have another brother killing his sister.
20:27 September 4, 2010 by mehta_p
When in Japan, Do as the Japanese Do

When in Germany, Do as the Germans Do

So, when any foreigner want to get more benifits from any country he/she is now, it would be better to do like the locals do.

Above that, when you hold citizenship of that country (here, Germany), you have additional responsibilities to serve the nation. So it would be better to mix with rest of civilians.

Upto certain extend I am agree with Sarazzin. Some of the foreigners espcially muslims do spend most of their time with those ppl who are from their country and/or religion. So many of them stay against Germans.

But due to Sarrazin's comments/book, many young muslims will definitely have better mind-set and hopefully they (in more numbers) will mix with germans and will be like Germans after holding German passport.

I was in Belgium duirng the week..was in Brussels and Antwerp. I was gla to come back to my family/germany on friday, on the ICE train from Frankfurt to Munich, two poleice officers entered the train for a normal "polizei contol" they targeted black people..asking for their IDs/passports ONLY black people! they didn´t ask other passengers that were white to show anything. I asked the officer why they only target black people, and he replied me that it is because we were the "non germans" on the train & that particular police control was to fish out ilegal immigrants travelling to Munich on that train. I felt very very bad.

I was asked to porve my ID because it´s obviuos that I´m not a German? is that encouraging integration? do they think integration is all about forcing immigrants to learn how to speak German? or eat bratwurst mit weizenbier? No!! integration is about making immigrants feel accepted and comfortable in their new homes..like that, they´ll seek to learnthe language & adopt the culture.
10:47 September 5, 2010 by Prufrock2010
The police targeted you because you were obviously guilty of RWB (Riding While Black). They've been doing that in Beverly Hills since the 1930s. There they call it DWB (driving while black) or WWB (walking while black). Now in Arizona they pull you over for DWM, RWM or WWM (Driving While Mexican, etc.).

I would have expected a little more tolerance in Europe, particularly in post-war Germany, but alas I was naļve. It's a good thing that my Jewish gene is not readily recognizable.

23:00 September 11, 2010 by username123456789
i have read: 60 $ agreed...: i want to add: forget about to think only on turks... right: they are the most, but you should make a difference between non-muslims and muslims. this makes the only difference. again: dont make differences between black and white and nation. even a white uk or german bloke can be a muslim...which is rare...but exists..meanwhile... in islamic countries there are also no christs or jews tolerated. or you think turkey has more than 2200 churches, like germany has mosques...!!!NO, it has not. but most politicans even dont know it ..they look only for getting votes, even make propaganda in german mosques to get votes from immigrantes....just for the NOW...not to think on the german future....these idiots.........give away germany for a few muslim-votes... read the quran and understand them better!
