Vandals attack 'veil martyr' memorial

Vandals have attacked an art project erected in honour of a pregnant Egyptian woman who was murdered in a German court room, organisers said Friday.

The Citizen.Courage group, which sponsored the display in the eastern city of Dresden, said that a few knife-shaped columns used in the open-air show had been knocked over several times and signs explaining the project were stolen.

"Citizen.Courage assumes this was a malicious, politically motivated attempt to destroy the project," group chairman Christian Demuth said in statement.

"To warn against everyday racism, we will not restore the destroyed installations. But we will continue the project."

A police spokeswoman said authorities had opened an investigation.

During a trial last July, a Russian-born defendant suddenly attacked Sherbini - who was Muslim and wore a headscarf - plunging an 18 centimetre kitchen knife at least 16 times into her while she was three-months pregnant with her second child.

Her son, Mustafa, three years old at the time, watched her bleed to death at the courtroom.

Sherbini's husband, Egyptian geneticist Elwy Okaz, rushed to her aid but was also stabbed repeatedly and then shot in the leg by a police officer confused about who was attacking whom.

The 28-year-old assailant, who was sentenced to life in prison, attacked her out of revenge after she pressed charges against him for calling her a "terrorist", "Islamist" and "whore" during a dispute over a playground swing.

The killing, and the initially muted reaction of Germany's politicians and media, sparked outrage in Sherbini's home country, as well as in the wider Muslim world.

Many newspapers dubbed her the "veil martyr" after her headscarf.

The "18 Stabs" installation, unveiled on the first anniversary of Sherbini's death on July 1, featured 18 knife-shaped concrete pillars erected throughout the city with signs condemning racism and xenophobic violence.

Terrible. That poor woman tried to defend herself instead of keeping what that moron said to her a secret. No wonder morons like the defendant get away with so much. Can't even feel safe in a freakin' courtroom!! This story makes me sick. It is a shame so many people like the defendant exist in this country.

@marimay - do you think that more people 'like the defendant' exist in germany than elsewhere?

That is a bad comment to make, I mean really, 'so many people like the defendant'! From my observation, people in Germany are excessively tolerant and fair-minded. A Caucasian in Japan, Beijing, Delhi, Tel Aviv, Tehran - you name it - would be at great risk of assault just because they are white. To believe that Caucasian people are in any way less tolerant than Asians or Africans is a complete reversal of the truth. For decades, Germans have been excessively accommodating to the suggestion of intolerance. So much so, that they are out of kilter with people in other parts of the World. It is so long, in fact, that it is high time Germans became more forthright in asserting themselves for what they are - a Nation with qualities that are admired all over the Globe.

"Veil martyr memorial" Why would any one want that in Germany?Sherbini being a Muslim ,and her husband being Egyptian, they should have it in Egypt. www.thereligionofpeace.com

surj, with your comment, it is obvious that you are capable of doing what the "defendant" did. a bloody insane animalistic racist being given a more acceptable name:-) you see, it´s funny when people just look for excuses to be racist! @fredsaxon, great comment from you..but unfortunately,we can´t have that type of Germany/Germans if we don´t seperate the East from the West Germany...Angela Merkel & Ballack should just take heart & forget home..the East Germans are far too behind when it comes to tolerance.

this story are very telling of racism in germany, oh but then it was not a german, it was a 'russian' born german, once again the 'russian immigrants' in germany who are violent and take the blame, its just side stepping the issue and not looking at the the matter in the face. .

It is a scandal that things like this can happen in a German court room. I wonder if it would have been allowed to happen if the victim was not an immigrant. This incident is almost as bad as the case of the refugee from Sierra Leone who was burned to death in a German prison cell whilst the German police acted like nothing was happening. Yet another sinister case of why and how can this sort of thing "REALLY" happen. http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,5093499,00.html

@ Johnne

...as opposed to west Germany who employed far more unreconstructed Nazis as politicians?

Recheck your figures, most head-NPDers aren't Ostdeutsch. That said, racism in Germany is a marginal problem compared to racism in places like France or the U.S.

Ultimately, sounds like some Scholl-styled antifa is all that's needed in this case.
